Undergraduate Majors

 

The Department of Geography & Geology currently offers 2 BSc Majors (Geography, Geology), a Double Major in Geography and Geology, 2 BSc Minors (Geography, Geology), 2 BSc (Special) Options (Geography, Geology), and the Environmental Sciences Option.

A BSc (Geography, Geology) General degree requires a minimum of 44 credits of which at least 32 should be from Level II and Level III courses. Entry requirements for a BSc General degree in Geography include a pass in Geography at CXC or GCE ‘O’ levels, and two GCE ‘A’ level passes in approved science subjects. Entry requirements for a BSc General (Geology) degree are two GCE ‘A’ level passes in approved science subjects.
Students are advised that compulsory field work in the Department of Geography and Geology is carried out on Saturdays.

A BSc Special (Geography) degree requires a minimum of 56 credits in Geography of which at least 44 should be in Part II (Levesl II & III) courses. See Faculty Handbook for course details. A BSc Special (Geology) degree equires at least 64 credits in Part II Geology courses in addition to Level I Geology and Chemistry courses and Preliminary Physics courses. See Faculty Handbook for course details.

In addition the department also offers BA and BEd degrees in Geography to students of the Faculty of Humanities and Education. Entry requirements for the BA degree are a pass in Geography at CXC or GCE ‘O’ levels, and two GCE ‘A’ level passes. For the BEd programme, entry requirements are a pass in Geography at CXC or GCE ‘O’ levels, and two GCE ‘A’ level passes in approved science subjects. Students are advised that compulsory field work in the Department of Geography and Geology is carried out on Saturdays.

plus at least 28 credits from Part II GEOL or GGEO courses, which must include two Level III GEOL or GGEO courses.

A Minor in Geology requires a minimum of 16 credits of Part II GEOL or GGEO courses, which must include the following:
Two Level II GEOL courses
Two Level III GEOL or GGEO courses

Please note:
  • Students must have at least one GCE ‘A’ level pass or equivalent to register for a Level I course.
  • Not all elective courses are available every year.
  • Certain combinations of courses are limited by time-table constraints.
  • Students intending to read any course(s) in Geography and Geology are advised that it will be necessary to conduct fieldwork on Saturdays. Non-attendance will debar them from final examinations. All fieldwork in Geography and Geology is mandatory.
  • Where an examination has a practical or coursework component as well as a final examination, candidates must satisfy the examiners in both parts.
  • Both GG10A/GEOG1101 and GG10B/GEOG1201 must be successfully completed before the student can proceed to Part II courses in Geography.
  • Both GL10A/GEOL1001 and GL10B/GEOL1002 must be successfully completed before the student can proceed to Part II courses in Geology.
