A key objective of the SHP is to expand
further its outreach activities beyond the confines of the University,
and in so doing, broadened its target audience, thereby making it
more visible to the wider Jamaican community. While this has occurred,
especially through the SHP’s publications, there is still
more that can be done in this area.
With this in mind, the SHP over the last two years forged closer
collaborative links with institutions engaged in the preservation
and dissemination of social and cultural history both in and outside
Jamaica. The SHP and the National Library of Jamaica are engaged
in a collaborative project which will involve the input of graduate
students registered in the course MA heritage studies course, Historic
Landscapes and Environmental History. These students will as their
course work requirement, research the locations of buildings and
locations in the Downtown area of Kingston using the photographic
collection of the National Library of Jamaica. The intention is
to jointly publish material on Jamaica’s built environment
and architecture dating back to the 19th century.
Links have also been established with Liberty Hall-the Legacy of
Marcus Garvey, located at 76 King Street, Downtown, Kingston, where
the SHP’s first Social History exhibition was launched in
November, 2004. Liberty Hall, which is now in the process of establishing
a multi-media resource centre, and which services schools and the
surrounding communities of Downtown Kingston, will benefit by being
provided with a copy of the exhibition and any other material for
research and educational purposes.
