$2.5m donation to The UWI Mona for students in need

The Most Hon. Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party and Chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party Education Fund, visited The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Mona Campus, on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 to present the institution with gifts from the Jamaica Labour Party Education Fund and the Prime Minister’s Positive Jamaica Foundation; the total value of this donation was $2.5m.

Over 36 years ago, Professor Lalor, along with then Vice Chancellor, Aston Preston, recognized the role that nuclear technology could play in the advancement of inter-disciplinary work, with inputs from Natural Science, Medical Science and the Social Sciences; this resulted in the installation of the SLOWPOKE-2 Research Reactor at ICENS (formerly the Centre for Nuclear Sciences), as the flagship of the institution.

The UWI and University of Glasgow develop free online course on history and legacy of British slavery in the Caribbean

A new free online course is being launched to investigate the history of British colonial slavery in the Caribbean, reflecting its links to racial inequalities and present-day global protests. The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the University of Glasgow (UoG) are partnering to deliver this online course that will take participants on a 350-year journey from West Africa and the Caribbean through to the UK’s Windrush Generation and the present day.

One of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world, Open Society Foundations (OSF), has demonstrated its alignment with the strategic vision of The University of the West Indies (The UWI).  This was symbolized by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two entities — signed by Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and President of the OSF, Ambassador Patrick Gaspard on Thursday, September 17, 2020.

UWI Mona is making it easier for students to start University this Semester

The University of the West Indies, Mona (The UWI) has put measures in place to make it easier for students to pursue their dreams of completing their Degree as soon as possible. Chief among the measures being the ability for students to register once they start a Payment Plan, which only requires an initial payment of 15% of Tuition Fees and Full payment of the Miscellaneous fees. The remaining tuition fees would be due in small portions on a monthly basis as follows:

 ‪Sept 30th – 10% of Tuition Fees

UWI Global Giving receives US$250,000 to establish the Dr Doyle & Linda Slifer Endowment Fund

Dr Doyle Slifer, a distinguished alumnus of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), has made a US$250,000 donation to The UWI’s Global Giving campaign, joining in building a culture of philanthropy at the regional university.

The gift is an initial investment towards the establishment of the Dr Doyle & Linda Slifer Endowment Fund, with the US$250,000 to exist in perpetuity and the investment income to be used to provide scholarships and bursaries to deserving medical students across the University’s five campuses.

Dr. David Smith elected to SPAC and Jamaica to Executive Council of the IAI

Dr. David Smith, director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Coordinator of the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD) at The UWI, (on August 19, 2020), was elected a member of the Science Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) for the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). He was elected at the 28th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the IAI (CoP-28).
