UWI Professor Elected First Caribbean Distinguished Fellow of American Psychiatric Association

Dr. Frederick W. Hickling, Professor of Psychiatry, UWI, Mona has been elected to the status of Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).  This election makes him the first Caribbean psychiatrist from among 38, 000 psychiatrists in the APA to be afforded this honour.

UWI, Mona Hosts Local Governance Conference on January 8-9

“Local Governance and Intergovernmental Relations: Examining the Past, Assessing the Present and Predicting the Future” is the theme of the conference being hosted jointly by Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) and the Department of Government, UWI, Mona. Hon. Robert Montague, Minister of Local Government will speak at the opening session of the Conference being held on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at  9 am at the Graduate Lecture Theatre 3 (GLT 3) at UWI, Mona.

Six Receive Prestigious 60th Anniversary Postgraduate Scholarships

The University of the West Indies, Mona has awarded six postgraduate scholarships to research students at the institution whose programmes of study have the potential to have regional and international impact and will give credence to the University’s 60th anniversary theme “Caribbean Impact, Global Reach”. The prestigious 60th Anniversary Mona Scholarships were presented by Principal of the Mona Campus, Professor Gordon Shirley, on Monday, December 22, 2008 at a ceremony held in the Council Room at Mona.

UWI Receives Second Place Award for HIV/ AIDS Best Practice Award for Adoption of ILO workplace principles

The University of the West Indies, Mona received the second place “Best Practice Award for HIV/AIDS Adoption of International Labour Organization (ILO) workplace principles” in 2008.  The first place award went to The Sandals Chain and third place to Red Stripe.

UWI Wins Gleaner Honour Award

The University of the West Indies (UWI) has won the prestigious Gleaner Honour Award for Education, 2008.

The award was presented on Tuesday, November 11, 2008, by the Governor General, Most Hon. Sir Kenneth Hall (former principal of UWI) and Gleaner Managing Director, Oliver Clarke, to Professor  E. Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor, UWI,  Professor Gordon Shirley, UWI, Mona, Principal  and Dr. Muriel Lowe, one of UWI Mona's first graduates.

UWI Graduate Elected President of International War Crimes Tribunal

Patrick Lipton Robinson, a Jamaican judge serving at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia assumed duties as President of the Tribunal on November 17, 2008. Judge Robinson was first elected to the Tribunal in 1998 and has been re-elected twice since. He has served as the Presiding Judge for Trial Chamber III since 2004 and oversaw the historic trial of the former President of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic, the first former Head of State to be brought to trial for war crimes.

Sickle Cell Conference

"Managing Sickle Cell Disease: The Chronic Care Model" is the theme of the Conference being hosted by the Sickle Cell Unit (SCU) of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute at UWI on October 30-31, 2008.  The Conference begins with an Opening Ceremony on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona. On this occasion the local Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Sickle Cell Disease will be launched.

UWI Lecturer to Observe U.S. Electoral System Firsthand in I-VOTE 2008 Initiative

This year is an exciting one in U.S. politics with global attention on the American electoral process, particularly the presidential campaigns. One Jamaican, Dr. Lloyd Waller, lecturer in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus has been selected by the U.S. embassy in Kingston to experience first hand, the U.S. democratic process through I-VOTE 2008 (International Visitors Observe The Election). The exchange initiative is sponsored by the U.S Department of State and administered through the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy.
