Nettleford Appointed to Experts Human Rights Group

Vice Chancellor Emeritus of The University of the West Indies, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford, is one of five persons worldwide who has been appointed a  member of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent established by the United Nations Human Rights Council. The appointment takes effect on May 1, 2008.

Normality Returns to UWI Following the Passage of Hurricane Dean

The University of the West Indies, Mona wishes to further advise that following the passage of Hurricane Dean the Campus has returned to normality since Wednesday, August 22.

Water, electricity and the Campus’ information technology and telecommunications systems including student registration information systems, broadband and dial up services have been restored.

Faculty and all members of staff are required to report for normal work no later than Thursday, August 23.

The premier scholarly publishing house in the Caribbean, the University of the West Indies Press, and Jamaica’s largest book retailer and distributor, Kingston Bookshop Limited, created history recently when Kingston Bookshop became the exclusive distributor of UWI Press books in Jamaica.

UWI Reopens Wednesday, August 22,Orientation Begins Saturday, August 25

The University of the West Indies, Mona wishes to advise that Faculty and all other members of staff are required to report for normal work on Wednesday, August 22.

Parents and Spouses Orientation will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 25 at the Interfaculty Lecture Theatre.

New students who have been offered accommodation in halls of residence on Campus should arrive in their assigned halls on Saturday, August 25. Orientation activities for new students will commence on Sunday, August 26 at 8:30 a.m. at Rex Nettleford Hall.

MONA CAMPUS TO CLOSE DUE TO HURRICANE THREAT

The University of the West Indies wishes to advise that due to the threat posed by Hurricane Dean the Mona Campus will close at l:00 tomorrow, Saturday August 18, 2007 until weather conditions permit.

The University further advises that Parent Orientation scheduled for Sunday August 19 and the General Orientation activities scheduled to start on Monday August 20 have been postponed until further notice.

Advisory on the death of Dr. Peter Vogel

The Campus community has been shocked and saddened at the death of Dr. Peter Vogel of the Department of Life Sciences. Dr. Vogel was found dead at his home at 2 Long Mountain Close early this morning by a relative. The police advise that he was found bound hand and foot and gagged in his study, but there were no stab nor gunshot wounds. They report that a grill door at the rear of the house was open, and there were no signs of break-in.

Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence announced

Five members of the UWI academic staff will on October 24, 2007 receive the coveted Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for academic year 2006/2007, during a special ceremony at the Cave Hill Campus. Dr Tomlin J. Paul, Lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, Mona and Dr John Campbell, Lecturer in the Department of History at the St Augustine Campus will receive the Award for excellence in teaching, while for outstanding accomplishments in research the awardees will be Professor Susan P.

ARCHBISHOP OF YORK TO BE HONOURED AT SPECIAL CONVOCATION AT THE UWI

The Most Reverend, the Right Honourable Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, is to be conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws at a Special Convocation to be held in the Assembly Hall at the Mona Campus on Saturday, October 6, 2007 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Commemorative Linguistics Lecture in Honour of Professor Lawrence D. Carrington

The Head of the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at the Mona Campus of the University of the West, Professor Hubert Devonish, will deliver a commemorative lecture at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts on Tuesday, June 26, at 5:30 p.m.

His lecture is titled “ While You Were Away: The Exciting New World of Caribbean Linguistics ” and will be in tribute to retiring Director of the School of Continuing Studies, Pro Vice Chancellor Lawrence D. Carrington, Professor of Creole Linguistics.

Haiti benefits from training under CUPIDE

Faculty, administrative staff and students at University Quisqueya (UniQ), located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, are benefiting from training in the use of the open source learning management system (LMS), Moodle, for distance education. The training is being provided through the UNESCO/UWI Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education (CUPIDE) – a collaborative project among five universities in the region, designed to develop the human resource capacity in each of the universities to provide electronically enhanced teaching, administration and material distribution.
