UWI ORGANIZES LARGEST BLOOD DRIVE

The recently held Frank Worrell Commemorative Blood Drive saw 363 UWI students and staff turning out to give a pint of blood each. The University of the West Indies, Mona has made a national record with the highest total from a single institution. The Frank Worrell Commemorative Blood Drive is a collaborative effort involving the University Health Centre, the National Blood Transfusion Bank Service, and a group of final year Social Marketing students from The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC).

UWI Community Deeply Saddened At The Passing Of Professor Leslie Robinson

The University of the West Indies community is deeply saddened at the passing of Professor the Hon. Leslie Robinson on Wednesday, April 4. Professor Robinson, was a founding member of the academic staff of the then University College of the West Indies, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Acting Vice Chancellor, Director of Planning and the first Principal of the Mona Campus.

Enrollment at Mona Now All Time High of 15,398

Enrollment at the UWI Mona Campus for the 2005-2006 year now stands at an all time high of 15,398. This represents a six per cent increase over the 2004-2005 academic year. The proportion of persons enrolled in first degree programmes was eighty per cent to the nineteen per cent of students in higher degree programmes with the remaining one per cent comprising specially admitted students.

Professor Rex Nettleford Awarded Docteur Honoris Causaby University of the French Antilles

Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford, a Vice Chancellor emeritus of the University of the West Indies last week received a “Docteur Honoris Causa” degree from the Universite des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) at its Guadelope campus along with three other Caribbean awardees in what was the inaugural presentation of such doctorates by the French West Indian University.

UWI Vice Chancellor Pays Tribute to Angella King

The University of the West Indies wishes to place on record its gratitude to one of our most distinguished Honorary Graduates, Angela King, for the towering contribution which she made in the United Nations as an international Public Servant over four decades.

UNI-T FUN RUN/BIATHLON: “RUN 4 YOUR LIFE”

The University of the West Indies, Mona, The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) and Children and Community for Change are partnering to host the UNI-T Fun Run/Biathlon on Sunday, February 11, under the theme “Run 4 Your Life.” Under the patronage of Asafa Powell, the event aims to enhance community spirit and encourage and engage the community into healthier lifestyles.

New Deputy Director of the School of Continuing Studies Appointed - Mrs. Luz Longsworth

Professor Lawrence Carrington, Director of the School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Luz Longsworth to the position of Deputy Director of the SCS, as of January 1, 2007. Mrs. Longsworth has been seconded to this position for one year from her substantive position as the Resident Tutor and Head of the University Centre in Belize. She has already taken up her new responsibilities from January 8, 2007 and reports directly to the Director.

11th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work hosts its 11th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar on Saturday, January 27, under the theme: Gender: Community Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century. The event takes place at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona between 9 am and 5pm. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Leith Dunn, Head of Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit.

The University of the West Indies, Mona wishes to advise that the University Bookshop is mandated to sell textbooks and supporting material for the University’s courses.

Although the bookshop sells other reading material, this activity is totally dependent on its financial resources and the judgment of what are good sellers. This is a business decision.
