Commercialization of Higher Education Institutions a Concern

“There is universal concern for the increasing commercialization of institutions of higher education.” This is the view of Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Sir George Alleyne expressed in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 7th Mona Academic Conference on Friday (August 27) at the UWI, Mona campus. The conference itself is being held at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Social Sciences August 28-29 under the theme RevisitingTertiary & Higher Education Policy in Jamaica: Towards Personal Gain or Public Good?
UWI & PCJ COLLABORATE TO DELIVER - ALTERNATIVE ENERGY COURSE

As the region braces to deal with rising oil prices and depleting resources, The University of the West Indies (UWI) has developed an intensive Certificate course in Alternative Energy, aimed at equipping qualified persons with the technical skills required to ensure better energy management and develop new energy sources and technologies. Core financial support for the course is being provided by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ), which will also fund ten scholarships per year for a five year period.
Stakeholders to Discuss Higher & Tertiary Education Policy this Week-end

Ongoing debate on education in general and the significant changes taking place in tertiary and higher education in particular are the two issues which make this week-end’s (August 27-29) Mona Academic Conference to be held at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus a timely and important event on the education calendar. The conference’s opening ceremony takes place this Friday, August 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft, the Senate Building at Mona. The keynote address will be by UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne.
Tuition Fees Adjusted

Following on budget adjustment exercises as well as representations made by the Guild of Students at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, regarding the tuition fees for that Campus for the coming academic year, the Chancellor of the University established a committee to review the matter.
Mr. William Clarke, Chairman of the Mona Campus Council, chaired the committee with Dr. Marshall Hall and Mr. Lloyd Brown as the other members. The committee held various meetings with representatives of the University and the Guild, and has arrived at a conclusion agreed to by all parties.

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will once again host the Mona Academic Conference from Friday August 27 to Sunday August 29 coinciding with the start of the 2004/2005 academic year. This year’s conference is being held under the theme “Revisiting Tertiary & Higher Education Policy in Jamaica: Towards Personal Gain or Public Good?”. Sponsored by the Office of the Principal, it is being organised by the Research and Policy Group, a joint project of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) and the Mona School of Business (MSB) UWI, Mona.

VC DESIGNATE ADVOCATES CARIBBEAN REGIONAL RESEARCH FUNDING AGENCY

Vice Chancellor Designate of The University of the West Indies, Professor E. Nigel Harris, has urged CARICOM Heads of Government to consider the establishment of a Caribbean Regional Research Funding Agency. He said that such an agency would be financed by national and regional governments and would provide research funding on a competitive basis, using the peer review mechanism, and focusing on projects likely to contribute to the growth and development of the region.
DIPAK J. SHAH PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Dipak J. Shah, Senior lecturer in the Department of Pathology to the rank of Professor of (Anatomical) Pathology effective May 20, 2004.
Born in Jambusar, India, Professor Shah graduated from the M.S. University, Vadodara, India in 1969, with the Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery degree. He then received a Diploma in Clinical Pathology in 1972, also from M.S. University and the Doctor of Medicine in Anatomical Pathology from the UWI in 1978.
YVETTE JACKSON PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Yvette Jackson, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, to the rank of Professor, with effect from May 20, 2004.
Dr. Jackson, a Jamaican, and past student of Hampton School for Girls, holds the Bachelor of Science degree with Upper Second Class Honours in Chemistry and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
UWI, GUILD MEET TO DISCUSS TUITION FEES

Members of the administration of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, led by Deputy Principal, Mr. Joseph Pereira, and University Bursar, Mr. Winston Bayley, this morning (Tuesday, July 6, 2004) met with representatives of the Guild of Students, led by President, Mr. Damion Crawford, to discuss concerns raised by the Guild regarding tuition fees that will come into effect for the 2004-2005 academic year.
