THE UWI REACHES OUT TO HURRICANE VICTIMS

In response to the widespread destruction to a number of Caribbean countries from the very active 2004 hurricane season, the University of the West Indies has initiated a ‘Vice Chancellor’s Hurricane Recovery Task Force’ to offer technical advice and assistance to countries affected by Hurricane Ivan, in particular.

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE DEREGISTRATION OF STUDENTS OWING FEES.

The Finance and General Purposes Committee of the Mona Campus had given until October 15 for any student who had not paid their fees in full to do so or present a written request for a payment schedule on the basis of exceptional and verifiable difficulties. Those students who failed to meet these conditions would be deregistered. Facilities were in place up to 7:00p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 to handle all special requests. Almost all of these, totaling one hundred and sixty three undergraduate students, have been granted special payment arrangements.

UWI’S F&GPC AGREES TO FEE PAYMENT PROCEDURES

The Finance and General Purposes Committee of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus met on Friday, October 8, 2004 at the request of the Guild of Students at Mona to consider proposals from the Guild to address the problem of the non-payment of tuition fees by some students at the institution.

F&GPC considered the proposals from the Guild and those from the Administration and agreed to the following:

Help Desk established to assist Students

The University of the West Indies Mona has established a Help Desk to assist students who have paid their tuition fees, but whose records have not been updated and whose names have been removed from the list of registered students. The Help Desk will be located at the Undercroft of the Senate Building and will operate from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Students in this position are being asked to bring their receipts, in order to facilitate the updating process.

STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ON THE PASSING OF PROFESSOR EMERITUS GLADSTONE MILLS

It is with deep regret that the university learned of the passing of Professor Emeritus Gladstone Mills.

Professor Mills embodied optimism for the Jamaica that propelled him to become one of the nation’s supreme nation builders. From outstanding civil servant he advanced to a full blooded academic activism. And in both spheres he was demonstrably a dedicated professional, registered a career of classic distinction, and was instinctively at home with the levers of administration and leadership.

UWI TRAINING NURSES IN BScN PROGRAMME

The Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE), Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is now training some 150 students nurses who are pursuing the Bachelor of Science Nursing (BScN) degree programme. Head of DANE, Dr.

RESUMPTION OF CLASSES, WATER SUPPLY AT UWI, MONA

Classes at the UWI, Mona Campus will resume on Monday, September 20, 2004. Registration activities will also resume at that time and continue through to Friday, September 24.

Students who normally reside on campus are advised that they should return to the Halls of Residence on Sunday, September 19.

Staff and students, including those who reside on campus, are advised that they should bring their own drinking water until the supply from the National Water Commission returns to normal.

CLASSES RESUME AT UWI

Classes at the UWI, Mona Campus will resume on Monday, September 20, 2004. Registration activities will also resume at that time.

Faculty and all other members of staff are required to report to work on Friday, September 17. All staff are invited to attend a meeting on Friday at nine o’clock at the Undercroft of the Senate Building to receive an update from the Principal on recent developments and plans for the operation of the Campus.

Staff are advised that they should bring their own drinking water until the supply from the National Water Commission returns to normal.

MONA CAMPUS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

The UWI Mona Campus is now closed and will remain closed until further notice as the Campus has no water. Members of staff who need to come in to work will be advised by their Heads of Department.

Students who reside on campus should not return to the Halls of Residence until advised to do so.

CAMPUS TO CLOSE DUE TO HURRICANE THREAT

Owing to the threat posed by Hurricane Ivan, all classes, registration and other academic-related activities at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies will be suspended on Thursday and Friday, September 9 and 10, 2004, and until further notice.

Business activities will also be suspended. However, members of staff should report to work on Thursday to ensure that their departments are secured.
