INCREASES IN TUITION FEES AT UWI

The Council of the University of the West Indies at its annual business meeting held on Friday, April 23 at the Mona campus, set tuition fees for academic year 2004/2005 in accordance with its previous commitments to attain a cost recovery ratio of 20 percent of total economic costs on all three campuses, while keeping annual increases at least on par with the inflation rate in Jamaica for students at Mona.

Newly appointed Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Sir George Alleyne has challenged the institution to undertake a fundamental re-examination of some of the assumptions which have guided its operations in recent years.

UWI EXCEEDS ENROLMENT TARGETS

The University of the West Indies has exceeded the enrolment targets set in the Strategic Plan 2002-2007 in the second year of the five-year Plan period. The number of students pursuing first degrees grew by more than 4,000 – from a headcount of 15,307 in academic year 2001/02 to 19,373 across the three campuses in the current academic year 2003/04.

“Unlearn many of the things you have learned…” UWI Student Awardees told

Christian Stokes, Senior Vice President for Business Development at the Victoria Mutual Building Society and former Jamaica Bobsled team member has advised students at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus that they must unlearn many of the things they have learned. Mr. Stokes was giving the keynote address at UWI, Mona’s annual Student Awards Ceremony held on Saturday, April 17 at the Assembly Hall at Mona.

Symposium on “The Haiti-Jamaica Connection

The Latin American-Caribbean Centre (LACC), University of the West Indies, Mona will host a one-day Symposium titled “The Haiti-Jamaica Connection” on Saturday, April 3 at Mona. The Symposium is part of the annual series of Inter-Regional Migration Seminars and is timely in light of recent events. The symposium is being organised to mark the Bicentennial of Haiti’s independence and will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N 1) on the Mona Campus.

UWI APPOINTS ESTATE MANAGER

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Timothy Miller as Estate Manager, Maintenance Services at the Mona Campus, from August 1, 2003 to July 31, 2006 in the first instance.

UWI DERMATOLOGIST ELECTED TO PRESTIGIOUS AMERICAN ACADEMY

Lecturer in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Althea East-Innis has been elected an International Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

VC’S CRICKET MATCH TO USE ELEVEN PLAYERS PER TEAM

The Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Match between the touring English team and the Vice Chancellor’s X1 will be played as a normal, first class game, utilising eleven players per team. The Match begins tomorrow, Friday, March 5 and continues through to Sunday, March 7, 2004 at the UWI’s Mona Bowl.

The Vice Chancellor’s X1 comprises a combination of international players, West Indies players and students from the University of the West Indies. The match has been an annual fixture on the West Indies cricket schedule since 1996.
