THE UWI, MONA TO REOPEN ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2016

All offices of The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus will reopen for normal operations on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.  Members of staff should therefore report for duty at their regular times. 

 Classes will resume on Thursday October 6, 2016. Residential students who returned home should ensure that they move back on to their respective halls of residence in time to resume classes. 

 All examinations scheduled for Thursday, October 6th and Friday, October 7th, will take place as planned. 

The University of the West Indies, Mona encourages members of the community to take all precautions to ensure their own safety and that of their families.

 

 

 

UPDATE RE HURRICANE MATTHEW

Owing to the erratic behavior of Hurricane Matthew, The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus is unable to say when normal operations at the institution will resume. 

Staff and students should not return to the Campus until advised that it is safe to do so. The UWI, Mona will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with the Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management (ODPEM).  A further Advisory will be issued as soon as the system has passed.   

 The University of the West Indies, Mona encourages members of the community to take all precautions to ensure their own safety and that of their families.

 

 

The UWI, SUNY Launch Center for Leadership and Sustainable Development

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and The State University of New York (SUNY) have launched the SUNY UWI Center for Leadership and Sustainable Development on September 20, 2016 at the SUNY Global Center in New York. The Center will build on areas identified in previous UWI-SUNY analyses while also including research relevant to democratic participation, leadership, and governance, with a focus on solutions to specific problems constraining the achievement of the United Nation’s sustainable development goals, and also focus on serving groups that have faced barriers to equal opportunities.

Archiving Caribbean Literature and Popular Culture at the 35th Annual West Indian Literature Conference

The Department of Literatures in English, University of the West Indies, Mona, in association with The Western Jamaica Campus, will host the 35th annual West Indian Literature Conference at the Holiday Inn Resort, Montego Bay from October 6-8, 2016 under the theme “Archiving Caribbean Literature and Popular Culture”. Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, Dr. Carolyn Cooper, who will shortly retire from the Department of Literatures in English after 35 years of service to the UWI, will be one of three keynote speakers at the conference. Other keynote speakers are National Archivist, Mr. John Aarons O.D. and Professor of Cinematic Studies, Indiana University, Dr. Terri Francis. 

Eleven Honorary Degrees at The UWI 2016 Graduation Ceremonies

Members of the Council of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) approved 11 honorary degrees to be awarded at the University’s 2016 graduation ceremonies. The ceremonies are expected to kick off at the Open Campus in St Kitts and Nevis on 8 October, followed by the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados on 15 October, the St Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago on 20-22 October and will conclude with the Mona Campus in Jamaica on 28-29 October.

UWI AND RASTAFARI COMMUNITY TO JOINTLY HOST THIRD TRIENNIAL ASSEMBLY

The third Rastafari Studies Conference and General Assembly will be hosted by the Rastafari Studies Centre – Special Project, Office of the Principal, UWI Mona in collaboration with the Rastafari Community from August 14 – 21, 2016. The conference will be situated on the Mona and Western Jamaica Campuses of the University of the West Indies and in the general Rastafari Community at venues to be announced.  The theme for this year’s conference is The African Millennium in Perspective: Rastafari Business Enterprise Development. All are invited to participate.

Countdown to UWI’s Global Giving Week

Amidst increasing global and regional economic challenges, The UWI is making concerted efforts to create innovative and sustainable funding channels. A series of launch events—in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Belize, St Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, and in the diaspora communities in New York and Washington—have successfully set the stage for the inaugural UWI Global Giving Week.  
 

The UWI Mourns Passing of Former Professor George Nicholson

The UWI community is saddened at the passing of one of its stalwarts of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Professor George Nicholson.
 

Changing the Trajectory of the Caribbean - Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister visits The UWI Regional Headquarters

The Honourable Dr Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago describes The UWI as “The star in the crown of Caribbean nations that has kept the dream of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) alive.” Dr Rowley, a graduate of UWI Mona, was speaking at a ceremony at the campus on July 20, 2016, where he was inducted into Prime Minister’s Park.  The park honours UWI graduates who are or have been heads of government. He reminded the gathering, “It is the responsibility of all of us who have had the privilege of studying at The UWI, to ensure it continues to serve generations to come.”
 

The Honourable Dr Keith Rowley to Give Live Address at UWI in Jamaica

Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, The Honourable Dr Keith Rowley will address a town hall meeting at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Regional Headquarters, Mona, Jamaica on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. (Jamaica time). The address is scheduled among a number of other activities surrounding Dr Rowley’s first official visit to Jamaica as Prime Minister.
