Experts in Jamaican Share Solutions for Caribbean Crime at UWI Vice-Chancellor's Forum

On Wednesday, June 21, 2017, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) hosted a forum aimed at tackling solutions to crime in the Caribbean Region. The forum themed “Taming the Caribbean Crime Monster: A Solutions Agenda” was held at The UWI Regional Headquarters in Jamaica and streamed live via the University’s multimedia, public information and education service, UWItv.

Dacres achieves first Diamond League win

The University of the West Indies, Mona congratulates scholarship athlete and discus thrower, Federick Dacres, on his outstanding performance at the recent IAAF(International Association of Athletics Federation) Diamond League meet held in  Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday, June 18, 2017.   Dacres threw a distance of 68.36m,  the third-farthest distance so far this season. It was the first IAAF Diamond League win of his career.

The 23-year-old has been having an excellent season. He set the national record for Jamaica twice this year, first in January at the Big Shot Invitational meet with a throw of 68.67m, then broke it just two weeks later at the King of the Ring throws meet at Excelsior High with a mark of 68.88 on February 11.

Dr Paul D. Brown elected as Vice-Chair for inaugural ASM Council on Microbial Sciences

Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, Dr. Paul Brown, has been elected as Vice-Chair for the inaugural Council on Microbial Sciences (COMS) of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
 

The UWI’s Mona Campus Takes Title as 2017 UWI Inter-Campus Games Champions

The University of the West Indies, Mona campus emerged as the 2017 UWI Inter-Campus Games Champions at the close of the 2017 UWI Inter-Campus Games held recently at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus in Barbados. Defending champions, Mona, amassed 102 points, to edge out Cave Hill with 100 points. St. Augustine closed with 76 points, coming in third place and the Open Campus team, which competed only for the second time in the Games’ 52-year-history, earned 18 points.
 

Dr. Stacy Stephenson-Clarke selected as American Society for Microbiology [ASM] Young Ambassador of Science to Jamaica

Lecturer in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Dr. Stacy Stephenson-Clarke, has been appointed as the American Society of Microbiologists’ (ASM) Young Ambassador to Jamaica, effective March 7, 2017.
