First Cohort of Graduates in University Teaching and Learning to be Presented at 2010 Graduation

The first cohort of graduates to pursue the postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning will be presented during the UWI, Mona Graduation Ceremony to be held on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 5:30 pm. Five academic staff members will be presented on this occasion. This inaugural event underscores the University’s commitment to excellence in teaching. It is also in keeping with the UWI Strategic Development Plan that gives primacy to teaching, learning and research.

UWI Professor Receives Gleaner Honour Award

Dr. Wayne McLaughlin, Professor in Molecular Biology and Director of Caribbean Genetics (CARIGEN), the commercial forensic DNA laboratory at UWI, Mona was one of four recipients of the 2010 Gleaner Honour Award which was presented recently. Professor McLaughlin was recognized for his outstanding work in Science and Technology. The other awardees included: Andrews Memorial Hospital for Health and Wellness; R. 'Danny' Williams for Voluntary Service and Northern Caribbean University’s Team Xormis, who secured a Special Award for their positive contribution to quality of life. Team Xormis, won the Interoperability Category at the eighth annual Microsoft Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals on July 8 in Poland

Tropical Storm Tomas- Severe Weather Bulletin 1

Tropical Storm, Tomas could strengthen into a Hurricane. The system over the next forty-eight hours (48) is expected to turn towards the north and move in the direction of the island of Hispaniola.

The Meteorological community is almost in consensus that, if Tomas remains on its projected path, Jamaica should not receive a direct hit. However, the island could experience rainfall ranging from torrential rainfall to that of tropical storm conditions. The weather could start to deteriorate as early as Wednesday afternoon/ evening and continue into Thursday and Friday.

Advisory In Relation To Tropical Storm Tomas

The University of the West Indies, Mona is monitoring the situation in light of forecasts that Jamaica may be affected by Tropical Storm Tomas and is taking the necessary steps to safeguard life and property.

The path that Tomas will take remains quite uncertain, and The University will remain in close contact with the Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management (ODPEM), and be guided accordingly.  Hurricane Preparedness plans have been initiated. 

UWI Assists in Rebuilding Higher Education in Haiti

The Mona Campus as part of The University of the West Indies (UWI) / Haiti Initiative has been playing a significant role in the rebuilding of Higher Education in Haiti. Currently, some twenty-five students of the State University of Haiti are completing the final year of their degree programme at the Mona Campus. The students were granted full scholarships for one year of study after a rigorous process of selection. They are taking classes in the faculties of Social Sciences, Pure and Applied Sciences and Humanities and Education.  The Haitian students are completing course work already begun in Haiti yet interrupted by the devastating earthquake.

Tribute To The Late Prime Minister Of Barbados, The Rt. Hon. David Thompson, By The Chancellor Of The University Of The West Indies, Sir George Alleyne

The news of Prime Minister Thompson’s death cast somewhat of a pall on our graduation ceremonies for the Cave Hill Campus of the UWI yesterday. We observed moments of silence as was appropriate and in noting his passing I remarked that there would be another more appropriate time at which the University would record more formally a tribute to his work and memory.

The Vice Chancellor’s Tribute To The Rt. Hon David Thompson

The University of the West Indies mourns along with the people of Barbados and the Caribbean the loss of Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. David Thompson.  In his short term in office as Prime Minister of Barbados, he was impressive in the demonstration of his deep commitment to the development of his country and the region. His thoughtful and impactful interventions in various fora were insightful and fully appreciated. He was unswerving in his service to Barbados to the very end.   

UWI Professor to Participate in UNESCO Meeting on Media and Information Literacy

Head of the Department of Library and Information Studies at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Professor Claudette Fay Durrant will represent the institution at the expert group meeting “Development of Media and Information Literacy Indicators” which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from 4 to 6 November 2010.

Professor Terrence Forrester Receives Gold Musgrave Medal

Professor of Experimental Medicine and Director of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI) at the University of the West Indies, Dr. Terrence Forrester was honoured for his contribution to science with the award of the prestigious Gold Musgrave Medal at a presentation ceremony hosted by the Institute of Jamaica on Wednesday, October 15, 2010. Musgrave medals are awarded annually to selected persons for achievements in the fields of literature, art and science.

In a citation, Dr. Alfred Sangster, deputy chairman of the Council of the Institute of Jamaica, said; "Professor Forrester has earned an international reputation for research related to aeitology and pathogenesis of hypertension and whole-body protein metabolism in situations of metabolic challenge."

Regional University Honours Fifteen Caribbean Beacons

Some 15 persons will be honoured when The University of the West Indies (UWI) confers honorary degrees in the annual Graduation Ceremonies to be held throughout its four campuses between October and November 2010.
