The Actuarial Foundation Awards Two UWI Students with Scholarships

The Actuarial Foundation has awarded two students from the Department of Mathematics, UWI, Mona with Caribbean Actuarial Scholarships for the 2010/ 11 academic year. The recipients are Tashai Fung from Jamaica whose scholarship is valued at Two Thousand Five Hundred United States Dollars (USD $2500) and Johnathon Craig from Trinidad and Tobago, who received One Thousand Five Hundred United States Dollars (USD $1500).

Applications Invited for Rex Nettleford Fellowship in Cultural Studies

The Rex Nettleford Fellowship was established by the Rhodes Trust to mark the centenary of the Rhodes Scholarships in the Caribbean in 2004 and to honour the distinguished contribution of Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford O.M. to higher education and to the cultural life of the Caribbean.  Applications are invited for the Fellowship valued at ₤10,000 with an associated travel grant of ₤2,000. The closing date for receipt of applications by the Jamaica/Caribbean Secretary to the Rhodes Trust (‘the Secretary’) is April 30, 2011. Applicants are invited to visit the website at www.rhodes-caribbean.com for the terms and conditions and criteria. The prize will be awarded annually.

2012-2014 Fulbright Scholarships Available for Lecturers

UWI lecturers are invited to apply for the 2012-2014 Fulbright/LASPAU Faculty Development Program to undertake master's or doctoral-level study at U.S. universities. The scholarship is applicable to all fields of study with the exception of medicine, nursing, and dentistry. The award covers the cost of tuition, airfare to and from the United States, book allowance, monthly stipend and health insurance.

The scholarship is for one year beginning August/September 2012 and is renewable for a second year. It does not cover expenses for the grantee’s family. Recipients of a previous Fulbright grant are not eligible to apply.

St. Vincent Girls' High School Visits UWI, Mona

A contingent consisting of fifty (50) fourth form students and ten (10) teachers from the St. Vincent Girls' High School in St Vincent and the Grenadines, will visit The University of the West Indies, Mona on Monday, March 14, 2011. The students are studying Geography, History and the Theatre Arts and hope that this visit to Jamaica and the University will engender a greater awareness and appreciation for the rich heritage of Jamaica. While on their visit to UWI, Mona the delegation will take a tour of the campus exploring heritage sites. They will also be given an address by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Dr. Swithin Wilmot and participate in a presentation on the Maroon community in Jamaica.
 

The Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona Hosts Arts Troupe from Beijing

The Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Mona, will host a visiting arts troupe from the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) from March 13 – 17, 2011. This troupe includes famous Chinese Film Director, Mr. Xie Fei, Vice-President of the BLCU, Mr. Huo Mingjie, Ms. Wang Yang, an accomplished Chinese painter, as well as Mr. Wang Yuechuan, a Chinese calligrapher.

The tour begins with a public exhibition of paintings on March 14 at 10 am at the Main Library, UWI, Mona. Immediately following the opening, Mr. Wang Yuechuan will demonstrate his calligraphy skills. The BLCU Arts Troupe will have two performances at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA), UWI, Mona on March 14-15 at 7 pm nightly.

UWI Honours Outstanding Graduate Students

The University of the West Indies, Mona recognized 24 recipients of postgraduate awards at its third annual Scholars Breakfast held at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston on Thursday, March 3, 2011. The event forms part of an initiative to provide improved professional training and develop research competencies among its graduates, in order to satisfy economic development imperatives.  The objective is also to strengthen graduate programmes being offered by the institution.

UWI, Mona and University of Reading, UK Stage Seminars in Science and Mathematics Education

One hundred and sixty three (163) teachers participated in the recently held Inspiring Teachers and Learners: Creativity in the Math and Science Classroom seminars held at UWI, Mona recently.  Two workshops were organized by the Science, Mathematics and Information Technology (SMIT) Centre in the School of Education at UWI, Mona in partnership with the Institute of Education at University of Reading, UK.

The workshops were lead by Dr. Geoff Tennant and Ms. Deb Heighes, two educators from University of Reading. The workshops provided the teachers with simulation exercises demonstrating interactive and engaging strategies that can be utilized in the Science and Mathematics classroom at the secondary school level.

UWI, Mona and NEPA Sign MOU

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed recently between the University of the West Indies, Mona and The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) to formally place the UWI’s resources and knowledge in a framework of NEPA needs.

Under the MOU the UWI and NEPA will conduct collaborative research projects; exchange scientific and technical data, information and materials; provide technical assistance and training; and other cooperative efforts as necessary. Specific areas of the collaboration include: management of natural resources, biodiversity, ecosystems, protected areas, environmental models and simulations, ecological assessments, pollution assessment and hazard mapping and GIS and data management.

Ramphal Commission and The University of the West Indies Mount Discourse on Migration and Development

At a time when issues surrounding migration and its role in development have taken on primary importance to the survival of developing nations, the Ramphal Commission on Migration & Development, an arm of the Ramphal Centre, and the University of the West Indies (UWI) have come together to host a convention at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre at UWI, Mona from February 21 - 25.

The convention will include two public events, a public lecture on Monday February 21 at 6 pm and a symposium on Tuesday February 22 starting at 9:30 am.  In addition there will be a four-day conference of the Ramphal Commission from February 22-25.

UWI Remembers Rex

The Rex Nettleford Foundation, in collaboration with The University of the West Indies and the National Dance Theatre Company, will be honouring the late Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford with a week of activities from February 6-11 to mark his passing on February 2, 2010.  The week began with a Memorial Service on Sunday, February 6 at the tomb of the late Professor Nettleford.

Other events planned to mark the life of Professor Nettleford will include the launch of two books, ‘From the Heart: Eulogies by Rex Nettleford’ and ‘Jamaica Mahogany: Tributes to Rex Nettleford – Celebration of a Multi-textured Life’. The launch takes place on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.
