Orientation 2010

The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts Orientation 2010 over two days, August 23-24, 2010. The event begins with an Opening Ceremony at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona on Monday, August 23 at 10 a.m. Orientation 2010 will entail interesting discussions, campus tours, rap sessions and an entertainment extravaganza. All first year students are invited to attend.

The Orientation activities are designed to familiarize first year students with the University campus, student development programmes and activities. It will also assist students in adjusting to university experience.

Dr. Leith Dunn Named To Commonwealth Observer Group For Rwanda Elections

Sociologist and Head of the Mona Unit of  UWI's Institute for Gender and Development Studies, Dr. Leith Dunn, has again been named a member of a Commonwealth Elections Observer Group for the Presidential Elections in an African country. This time, she will join the team of Commonwealth observers for President Presidential elections in Rwanda which takes place on Monday, August 9.

Dr. Dunn leaves the island shortly to join a thirteen-member delegation of eminent persons drawn from Africa, Asia, North America, Europe, the Pacific and the Caribbean, appointed by Commonwealth Secretary General, His Excellency Mr. Kamelesh Sharma. The Commonwealth Observer Group will be led by former Tanzanian Prime Minister, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim.

UWI, Mona to Implement New Initiatives

The University of the West Indies, Mona will have to further restructure its operations and make changes which would allow the campus to survive and compete in the future. This was the view expressed by Principal, Professor the Hon. Gordon Shirley, as he addressed members of staff on Thursday, July 29 at one in the series of town hall meetings aimed at providing regular updates on the progress being made to address the significant cut in government subvention to the Campus.

UWI, Mona Now Sole Owner of NewsTalk 93 FM

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus recently acquired the forty nine per cent (49%) shares previously held by the Breakfast Club Limited in Universal Media Company (UMC) which operates NewsTalk 93 FM. The University of the West Indies Mona Campus is now the sole owner of Universal Media Company Limited.  The UMC was incorporated in December 2005 with the University being the majority shareholder. The University of the West Indies is the holder of the Broadcast licence.


Under the new arrangement, the management structure and programmes of NewsTalk 93 FM are currently being evaluated and the University of the West Indies will make further announcements regarding the changes to be implemented.

UWI Revolution Off to the Super League

The UWI Revolution netball team blasted its way into the Super League, emerging champions in the 2010 Supreme Ventures /Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Divisional ‘A’ League after defeating the Jetsetters “A”, 55-42, in the final round of the competition held at the National Stadium.   The UWI, Mona team is a newcomer to the Divisional ‘A’ League and has surfaced from a three year hiatus in active netball club league competition. This win represents the first time that UWI, Mona has entered the competition at such a prestigious level.

UWI, Mona Organizes Library Mission in Haiti

As part of its efforts to assist in the recovery and preservation of Haitian historical records, the UWI, Mona organized a library mission visit from the UWI to Haiti between July 12-16, 2010. The January earthquake significantly damaged the main library and archive buildings in Haiti which housed the documents of the country's rich history as a result there is a need for support in preservation and training.

Five To Receive The Prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award For Excellence, 2010

Five members of the academic staff at the Cave Hill, Mona and St Augustine Campuses of The University of the West Indies, namely, Professor John Agard, Dr Kusha Haraksingh, Dr Dave Chadee, Professor Maureen Samms-Vaughan and Professor Clive Landis will receive the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the academic year 2009/2010 at a special ceremony to be held on October 21, 2010 at the Cave Hill Campus.  The Awards will be presented by the Vice Chancellor.

UWI, Mona Cops Five Awards at the GraceKennedy Education Run

The University of the West Indies, Mona took home five awards from the recently held GraceKennedy Education Run. The UWI, Mona team won the award for the Best Corporate Team for both the Run and Walk category topping approximately fifty corporate teams. In addition three members of the UWI, Mona contingent received individual prizes namely:  Jessica McPherrin and Cherine Richards for 2nd and 3rd place – Corporate Team Run (Female) category and Ronald Reid, 3rd place –Corporate Team Walk (Male). This was the University of the West Indies, Mona debut as a corporate team at such an event.

Professor Anthony Chen Heads Team of Experts in Alternative Energy Course

Professor Anthony Chen, Member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which shared the 2007 Nobel Prize with former US Vice President, Al Gore and Professor of Applied Atmospheric Physics, UWI, Mona will lead the team of academics and industry experts in the modular Alternative Energy course. The course consists of three one week modules and runs from July 12-30, 2010. It is designed to introduce and interest various stakeholders in renewable energy as an alternate to fossil fuel and to improve the understanding of the operations and applications of various forms of renewable energy. In addition, the course will increase the competence of industry practitioners and enhance domestic and commercial applications of alternative energy.

UWI Open Campus to roll out CCDC’S Child Rights Education Project

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus will soon roll out a new course specially designed for professionals working with or on behalf of children. The pilot multidisciplinary Child Rights and Responsibilities course, which was developed by the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC) of the Consortium for Social Development and Research at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus, is being described as an important part of the process of developing academic courses that support civil society and competence building on children’s rights and childhood issues.
