UWI, Mona, First Tertiary Institution to Head to Super League Next Season

The UWI, Mona football team made history on Saturday, March 20 at the Vauxhall High School football field as the team was crowned champion of the Claro/KSAFA (Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association) Major League Competition. The win qualifies the UWI, Mona team to play in the Super League next season, a first for any tertiary institution.

The UWI, Mona team defeated Brown’s Town 3-0 thanks in part to two goals scored by Andre Bernal, a UWI football scholarship recipient, and one by O’Neil Fairweather. Andre Bernal is UWI’s leading goal scorer and jointly holds second place as the League’s leading goal scorer, having scored 12 goals in 10 Matches.

146 Students to Participate in the Semifinal Round Jamaica Mathematical Olympiad

Some 146 students from Grades 7 – 11 from approximately 33 secondary high schools across Jamaica will participate in the semifinal round of the 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad on Saturday March 27 on the Mona Campus. The Olympiad is organized by Department of Mathematics at The UWI, Mona in collaboration with Sterling Asset Management.

UWI Vice Chancellor named new UNICA President and presents Association’s declaration on Haiti

Following the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Universities and Research Institutions of the Caribbean (UNICA) on March 16 2010, the Association announced the appointment of UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris as the new President of UNICA.

Professor Kathleen Coard wins Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Award

A Professor of Pathology at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus in Jamaica will soon receive TT$500,000 to support her work and professional development. Professor Kathleen Coard is expected to accept the cash award, along with the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence (ANSCAFE) medal and citation, at a formal award ceremony on April 17th, 2010.

UWI, Mona hosts 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad

Some 350 students from Grades 7 – 11 in approximately 45 secondary high schools across Jamaica gathered at the Assembly Hall on The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus this morning, Saturday, March 6, 2010 for the second round of the 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad which is being organised by Department of Mathematics at The UWI, Mona in collaboration with Sterling Asset Management.

The 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad is a national mathematical competition open to all high school students in Jamaica.  The students are competing for selection as National Mathematics Champion at their grade level. The top three overall performers will travel to Puerto Rico in May, 2010, to compete in the CENTRO 2010 Regional Mathematical Olympiad.

UWI– UK Collaboration To Create Champion Teachers Of Maths & Science

Twelve (12) Jamaican teachers pursuing the Masters in Education degree in Science and Mathematics Education at the School of Education, The University of the West Indies, Mona, will be going on a two week visit in May to the University of Reading, Institute of Education in the United Kingdom as part of an initiative to create Champion Teachers of Mathematics and Science.

UWI, Mona Offers Haitian Creole Course to Assist Disaster Relief Personnel in Haiti

The Jamaica Language Unit (JLU) in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at UWI, Mona launches a six week Certificate course in Haitian Creole starting on Monday, March 1, 2010. The programme of study in Haitian Creole for Select Interest Groups is designed to assist in the immediate relief efforts in Haiti by bridging the language barrier between the disaster relief experts and the Haitian population. The first cohort of participants in the Haitian Creole course will consist of 36 individuals namely: medical personnel, law enforcement officers, coastguards and engineers.

Mona Campus to Celebrate The Life of Rex Nettleford in an Evening of Music, Dance and Tributes

The Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies will be staging an event in celebration of the life of the late Vice Chancellor Emeritus, Professor, the Hon. Rex Nettleford, OM this Thursday, February 25, 2010 in the Oriental Gardens, Mona beginning at 5.30pm. 

The event, which will be managed by Jamaica’s acclaimed theatre director Brian Heap, Drama Tutor at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, Mona Campus, will comprise music, dance, poetry and theatre, reflecting the contributions Professor Nettleford made to Jamaica, the Region and world culture.

Rex Nettleford Foundation For Caribbean Cultural And Social Studies

As a lasting tribute to the life and work of the late Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, Professor The Honourable Rex Nettleford, the University of the West Indies has announced its intention to establish ‘The Rex Nettleford Foundation for Caribbean Cultural and Social Studies’.  The objective of the Foundation is to create an Endowment Fund, the proceeds of which will be used to support the research of exceptional postgraduate students and fellows in areas reflecting the breadth of Professor Nettleford’s own contributions to Caribbean development, whether in the arts, history, politics or culture of the Caribbean region.

Official Funeral for Vice Chancellor Emeritus Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford

The Funeral Service for Vice Chancellor Emeritus Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford will take place on Tuesday, February 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the University Chapel, Mona. Musical tributes by the University Singers and the Singers of the National Dance Theatre Company will be presented from 9:30 a.m. He will be accorded an official funeral by the Government of Jamaica.

The University of the West Indies advises members of the public who will be attending the funeral service for Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford of the following traffic arrangements for persons entering the Mona Campus on Tuesday, February 16.
