UWI, Mona to host Presentations on Haiti February 8 and 9, 2010

The recent catastrophic earthquake in Haiti and its long-term consequences has made the need to better understand our neighbouring republic more critical than ever. The earthquake, the worst natural disaster in the Caribbean this century, presents new challenges for Haiti and demands greater regional involvement. In its commitment to educate, support and inform the campus community and the wider public on Haiti's past, present, and future rebuilding, the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Office of the Principal will host a panel discussion and lectures on Haiti on Monday, February 8 and Tuesday February 9, 2010.

Campus Water Supply Restrictions -Update 2

The severe water restrictions currently being experienced by The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona are likely to continue over the next few months. Against that background, the University is instituting a number of measures to manage the water situation for the immediate future. A call centre has been established to respond to queries about the existing situation. The telephone numbers are 935-8010 or Extension 2010.

Campus Water Supply Restrictions- Update 1

The University of the West Indies, Mona has been experiencing very low water pressure
due to existing drought conditions across Jamaica and low water flows into the catchment areas which normally supply the institution.

As a result, the Campus has instituted a number of measures to deal with the situation:
•    Water is being trucked to critical areas, including the Health Centre and Halls of Residence
•    Arrangements are being made to provide water storage and pumping facilities across the campus e.g. faculties

Death of Professor The Hon. Rex Nettleford, OM, FIJ, OCC

The entire University of the West Indies community is devastated by the loss of the colossal Caribbean cultural icon, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford. Save for the three years he spent as a Rhodes Scholar at Oriel College, Oxford, Rex Nettleford has lived his entire adult life at and for The University of the West Indies. This life-long association with UWI began in 1953 when he entered the then University College of the West Indies to read for a degree in History.

Dr. Patricia DeLeon Named 2010 Mona Homecoming Honouree

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will host its annual Mona Homecoming Week of celebrations over the period February 14-20, 2010.   Mona Homecoming incorporates the annual Commemoration Celebrations which provide an opportunity to celebrate the founding of the University, to acknowledge its unique position as the only higher education institution with a presence throughout the English speaking Caribbean, while assisting to engender a greater sense of belonging and develop a feeling of camaraderie among staff, students and alumni.

UWI Mona Hosts Research Day 2010

Minister of Education, Hon. Andrew Holness, will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony of the annual Research Day activities at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, which takes place on Thursday, January 28 at 9 am.  The two-day exhibition takes place January 28-29, under the theme “Education for a better nation, a stronger region”.

UWI PhD Students Receive Trilateral Reconnection Programme Scholarships

The first two recipients of the Trilateral Reconnection Programme Scholarships are Shakeisha Wilson from the Department of Community and Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences and Amina Blackwood-Meeks, Institute of Caribbean Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Education.    Both are PhD candidates at the UWI, Mona.   Shakeisha is currently conducting research on HIV/AIDS and Amina’s centres on Storytelling as a means of preserving local culture. Both will conduct their research at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa.

UWI Vice Chancellor Receives Martin Luther King Jr., Legacy Award

The University of the West Indies (UWI), Vice Chancellor, Prof. E. Nigel Harris, has earned the prestigious “Martin Luther King Legacy Award for International Service” from the Washington-based Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural & Minority Medicine.

UWI Opens Bank Account for Haiti Contributions

The Executive Management Team of The University of the West Indies met on Thursday, January 14, to coordinate its assistance to the people of Haiti in the wake of the earthquake that has devastated that country. 

Two engineers from the St. Augustine Campus were a part of a Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) assessment team and medical personnel from the Mona campus who accompanied Prime Minister Bruce Golding of Jamaica on his reconnaissance mission that left Jamaica for Haiti on January 14.
