Mona Academic Conference

“Writing Life: Reflections of West Indian Writers” is the theme of the 2006 Mona Academic Conference which takes place at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus August 25-27 . The conference will bring together a significant number of poets, writers of fiction and playwrights who have been part of the UWI community, for readings, discussions and other presentations so that the public may become aware of the volume and range of creative writing by UWI-related writers. Derek Walcott, Merle Hodge and Kwame James are among the writers who have already confirmed their attendance.

Online Registration

UWI students are advised that the online registration site is open and they may log on to: http://www.srs.uwimona.edu.jm:1104 Normal registration will take place from September 4-8, 2006 and late registration will take place from September 11-15 on payment of a late registration fee. Payments can be made online using the UWI Mona E Commerce facility at http://www.mona.uwi.edu/studinfo/fees Fees can also be paid at the following locations without a UWI generated payment voucher: Paymaster, Bill Express, UWI Bursary Cashier, UWI (Mona) and Community Co-op. Credit Union Ltd.

Orientation for New Academic and Senior Administrative Staff

The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) invites new and existing members of the academic and senior administrative staff to its Orientation Workshop. This workshop is designed to acquaint new members of staff with the history, structure and policies of the institution within the context of higher education in the Caribbean. It will also familiarize new members of staff with the programmes, rules, procedures and services of the institution as well as encourage positive staff/student relationships.

UWI/UNESCO Sign MOU for Small Island Developing States

The Universities Consortium of Small Island States (USCIS) and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office of the Caribbean, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate sustainable development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the fields of: climate change, natural and environmental disasters, waste management, resources management, culture, and sustainable living and development. The MOU was signed by UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris and Mr.

2006/07 Vehicle Stickers

To provide for easier distribution of Vehicle Access Stickers, members of staff whose motor vehicle particulars are the same as they were last year are asked to collect their stickers at their department office during the week commencing August 2, 2006.

Back to School Medicals!!!

The Health Centre is offering medicals to students of all educational institutions for the period July 1 to August 31. Student categories include GSAT awardees entering High School, returning High School Students, students of Primary and Preparatory Schools, new and returning students of The University of The West Indies, University of Technology, Jamaica, UTC, Teachers’ Training Colleges and others.
Charges are $1,000 (for basic service). Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Faculty of Medical Sciences 15th Annual Research Conference

The Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies, Mona, will host its 15th Annual Research Conference from November 15-17, 2006 at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona. Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentations at the
meeting. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is: July 31, 2006.

Hurricane Tips

Here are some hurricane terminologies that you should be familiar with.
HURRICANE TERMINOLOGIES:
ADVISORY: Advisories are messages issued by the Meteorological Office, concerning all Tropical Depressions, Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. An advisory gives details as to:
 where the system is located ▪ its intensity ▪ its direction and ▪ speed of movement.
TROPICAL DEPRESSION: A Tropical Depression is a closed circulation of low atmospheric pressure, originating over tropical waters. It blows counter clockwise around a centre with wind speeds of less than 39 miles per hour.

Learning for Life: Information Literacy, Skills for Today and Tomorrow Workshop

The Mona Information Literacy Unit of the UWI Library will host a 5-day workshop on information skills specifically for high school students during the period August 14-18, 2006. The Venue is the Main Library, UWI, Mona.
The Workshop aims to Increase information literacy skills among high school students, Help students make the transition from high school to university, Improve research readiness among incoming UWI, Mona students and further links between High Schools and the UWI.
