Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford appointed Ambassador at Large
Former Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford has been appointed an Ambassador at Large by the Government of Jamaica. The announcement was made on Friday, September 24 by Minister of Information the Hon. Burchell Whiteman who represented the Prime Minister, at a Cultural Evening and Reception organised by the University to honour the outgoing Vice Chancellor.
Skills Workshop Series
The Study Skills Workshop series put on by the University Counselling Service at Mona continues on October 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 2.00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, (N1) Faculty of Humanities and Education. The sessions are intended to assist students to improve their note taking, test taking and time management skills. The workshops will also cover improving memory and concentration as well as assessing and working effectively with learning styles. The workshops are open to all members of the campus community.
The UWI Open Scholarship Award
The University of the West Indies has awarded some twenty seven open scholarships for the 2004 – 2005 academic year. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit as assessed by the University scholarship examination which is set each year. Eleven of the awardees will pursue studies at the UWI’s Mona Campus, three will attend at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados and the remaining thirteen will pursue undergraduate studies at the St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad.
“Rise of Pentecostalism”
The Revd. Dr. Carmelo Alvarez will deliver a lecture entitled “The Rise of Pentecostalism in Latin America and the Caribbean” on Monday, October 4 at the United Theological College of the West Indies, 7 Golding Avenue in Kingston, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Interested persons are invited to attend.
Annual Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony
The Annual Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony which was postponed at UWI Mona because of the effects of hurricane Ivan has now been rescheduled for Thursday, September 30 at 4:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall at Mona. New students are required to assemble at the Undercroft of the Senate Building at 3:00 p.m. to sign the Matriculation Register. A matriculation ceremony is the occasion on which students are formally recognized as members of a University.
Annual Welcome Service
The annual Welcome Service which was also postponed because of hurricane Ivan will now be held on Sunday, October 3 at the University Chapel starting at 9:00 a.m. All new and returning students and members of staff as well as members of the surrounding community are invited to attend.
Association of Caribbean Universities and Research Institutes (UNICA)
The annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean Universities and Research Institutes (UNICA) will be held from November 10-13, 2004 in Curacao and will be hosted by the University of the Netherlands Antilles (UNA). The Conference will from part of the UNA’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
Caribbean Conference on Philanthropy Postponed

CULTURAL RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF PROFESSOR THE HON. REX NETTLEFORD
As you are aware, the Vice Chancellor, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford, demits office on Thursday, September 30, 2004 after an outstanding career of more than 50 years with The University of the West Indies.
In recognition of his contribution to the institution, the Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, will host A Cultural Evening & Reception on Friday, September 24, 2004 at 6.30 p.m. at the Assembly Hall, Mona Campus. The Reception will follow at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge & Conference Centre.
Great Book Sale Postponed
The University of the West Indies Press’ Tenth Great Book Sale scheduled for Monday, September 27, to Friday, October 1, 2004 has been postponed until further notice.
