Orientation Activities for New Students
Orientation activities for new students entering UWI Mona for the 2004/2005 academic year begins on Sunday, August 22 with orientation for the parents and spouses of new students. The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the venue is the Assembly Hall at Mona. The day’s activities include presentations from members of the Campus Administration; including Deans of Faculties; Representatives of Student Services; Safety & Security; Bursary Personnel as well as members of the Counselling Unit and Guild of Students representatives.
Orientation Programme for New Academic and Senior Administrative staff (2004/2005)
The annual orientation programme for new Academic and Senior Administrative staff (2004/2005) is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, August 17 and 18, 2004, between 9:00am to 2:00pm in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library. The programme will feature an introduction of the University as well as discussions on some of the challenges that staff may encounter. All new and not so new members of the academic and senior administrative staff are invited.
The UWI’s HIV/AIDS Response Programme
The University of the West Indies HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWI HARP) has donated a total of 63 titles on or related to HIV/AIDS to the UWI Main Library (Mona). A handover ceremony was held at the Library on August 12, 2004 to mark the donation of these titles which span a range of disciplines and subjects including Ethics and Law, Communication, Public Health, HIV Programme Evaluation and Behaviour Change, among others.
Registration Information - Graduate Students (New and Returning)
New and returning Graduate students at UWI Mona are invited to collect their registration packages beginning August 9, 2004 at the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. Students will be able to registration at the Assembly Hall at Mona September 1 to 8 and in the Dramatic Theatre from September 9 to 17. Service of Thanksgiving – Sir Kenneth Standard
The Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Sir Kenneth Standard will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2004. Musical tributes will commence at 12:30 p.m. and the Thanksgiving Service will commence at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Providence Methodist Church Cemetery in Liguanea. As a mark of respect, members of the academic staff are asked to wear academic dress for this service. Academic gowns may be obtained from Mrs. Joy Patel in the Examinations Section no later than Monday, August 9 at 12 noon.
Sir Kenneth Standard
The University of the West Indies has learnt with regret of the death of Professor Emeritus of Social and Preventive Medicine, Sir Kenneth Standard. Sir Kenneth died on Monday, August 2 after a long illness. In a tribute to Professor Standard, UWI Vice Chancellor, Prof. the Hon. Rex Nettleford hailed the public health pioneer for his contribution to that field. Professor Nettleford said that no one in the Caribbean region has had a greater commitment to Community Health than Ken Standard.
Tribute from UWI Medical Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter)
President of The UWI Medical Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter), Dr. Anna Matthews issued the following tribute to Sir Kenneth Standard.
The UWI Medical Alumni Association Jamaica Chapter wishes to express its deep regret at the passing of Professor Sir Kenneth Standard an alumnus of the pioneering First Class of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. He was indeed a stalwart, an icon of all that the medical profession is supposed to stand for.
A Supervisor Development Workshop
In February 2004, the Office of Research and the Instructional Development Unit, Mona co-hosted ‘A Supervisor Development Workshop’ for colleagues involved in supervising students. While the focus of the workshop was on supervising Ph.D. students, participants found that the guidelines benefited research students generally. The success of the workshop led to many requests for a repeat of the presentation, particularly from colleagues whose work demands at the time did not allow them to participate. A repeat workshop will be offered and will be conducted by the same presenter, Prof.
CARIMAC Alumni Association
On Friday, August 6, 2004 at 8:00 p.m., the CARIMAC Alumni Association will host a special Independence Day performance of the National Dance Theatre Company's 42nd Season of Dance at the Little Theatre, Tom Redcam Drive. Tickets are available at a special rate of $500. As part of the event, the CARIMAC Alumni will be honouring Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford for his contribution to CARIMAC. Tickets are available at the Little Theatre Box Office (926-6129) or at CARIMAC (977-1397-9).
Country Conference Series
The School of Continuing Studies, UWI will host another in its Country Conference Series with the St. Lucia Conference from November 18 to 20, 2004 in Castries, St. Lucia. The St. Lucia Conference is a multi-disciplinary conference focusing on issues relevant to St. Lucia. This is the ninth conference in the School's Country Conference Series. The conference will be open to the public and will provide a forum for the discussion of local issues. The School is inviting abstracts from persons with a research interest in St. Lucia. Deadline for the receipt of abstracts is September 27.
