Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre 50th Anniversary

The Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre’s 50th Anniversary Service of Thanksgiving will take place on Sunday, October 24 at the UWI Chapel at 11:30 a.m. All are invited.

Symposium on World Cup Cricket

The Mona School of Business, in conjunction with the JCC Conference Board, Jampro and the Jamaica Tourist Board will host a symposium on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at The Mona Visitors’ Lodge & Conference Centre from 8:00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The symposium’s objective is to sensitize Jamaican businesses about the mechanics of positioning themselves to fully exploit the third largest sporting event in the world, the World Cup Cricket Tournament to take place in Jamaica and the Caribbean in 2007.

The Writing Centre, UWI

The Writing Centre at UWI, Mona is offering several special courses this semester to UWI staff and members of the public. The courses are: Writing for the World of Work; The Art of Public Speaking and Fundamentals of English. F&GPC Agrees to Fee Payment Procedures

The Finance and General Purposes Committee of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus met on Friday, October 8, 2004 at the request of the Guild of Students at Mona to consider proposals from the Guild to address the problem of the non-payment of tuition fees by some students at the institution.
F&GPC considered the proposals from the Guild and those from the Administration and unanimously agreed to the following:

Annual World of Work Seminars

The annual World of Work Seminars organised by the Office of Placement and Career Services begin on Thursday, October 14 and continue through to November 25. The series of seminars focus on assisting students to develop skills and competencies needed to be successful in the world of work. Presenters for the seminars are mainly Human Resource Practitioners from the Public and Private Sectors. Topics to be dealt with will cover a wide area including ‘Entrepreneurship” and ‘How to Prepare for and Attend an Interview’.

Cashier Unit

The Cashier Unit in the Bursary at the Mona Campus will be open for business up to 4:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays, until Friday October 15. This is to facilitate students who wish to pay their tuition fees. Students are also reminded that all fees, inclusive of late fees, may be paid at the Campus branch of National Commercial Bank.

Creating Winners at the Workplace

As part of an initiative to develop and enhance the competencies of its supervisory staff, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will mount the third in a series of workshop being held with the title “Creating Winners at the Workplace.” The course consists of twelve modules which will be held over the period October 26 to December 7. Workshop sessions will be held from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. each day at the Instructional Development Unit on Ring Road.

Defence College Visit

A group from the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) in the United Kingdom will visit the UWI, Mona Campus on Wednesday, October 13, as part of a programme of visits which will take participants to the United States, Canada and Jamaica. The RCDS is one of the most prestigious institutions of its kind in the world. The College brings together military and civilian high fliers from all over the world for a yearlong course on International Relations and Security, which is held in London. As part of the course, participants undertake one-month study tours to eight regions of the world.

Options available to Students

The University has announced a number of options to be made available to students who are unable to pay the tuition fee in full for the semester. Students who have registered full time, have the option to change their registration to part-time and pay the reduced fees. Part-time students also have the option of reducing the number of courses for which they are registered, thereby reducing the number of credits for which they have to pay. Part-time students will be allowed to pay for the credits to be taken in semester one or fifty per cent of the year’s total as they choose.

Quality Needs U

The Quality Assurance Unit in the Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies will be launching the Quality Assurance Forum, Quality Needs U on October 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library.
