Professor D. A. N. Hoyte
Professor D. A. N. Hoyte passed away on August 23, 2004 in the little village of West Leake in Nottinghamshire, England. He was Professor of Anatomy, UWI in the sixties and seventies when he left Jamaica. He will be remembered by his medical students for the clarity and enthusiasm with which he taught Anatomy at Mona.
Credit Union Funds Park
The Campus community is being advised that work has begun on a proposed landscaped park, which is being funded by the UWI (Mona) and Community Cooperative Credit Union Ltd. The park will be located at the corner of Roseau Road and Gibraltar Camp Way (opposite Irvine Hall) on the vacant lot that once housed the University Nunnery and the Credit Union.
Memorial Service for Gordon Draper
In order to honour the memory of Mr. Gordon Draper who passed away on Thursday, August 12 in London the UWI, through the Mona School of Business has planned a Memorial Service for Wednesday, September 1 at 10:00 a.m. at the University Chapel, Mona. Gordon Draper, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago, was also a Director of International Development of the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM).
National Honours and Awards to UWI Associates
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus extends warm congratulations to three associates who were named to receive national honours and awards recently. Receiving the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer are Dr. Heloise Lewis, former head of the Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Education at Mona who is now retired; Mrs. Vivelyn Latty-Scott, part-time cricket coach in the Sports department, Office of Student Services; and Mrs. Barbara Requa, part-time lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies.
Orientation on Monday, August 23
Orientation for New students begin in earnest on Monday August 23, at 9:00 a.m. with the Welcome & Introduction from Acting Director of Student Services, Horton Dolphin and President, Guild of Students Damion Crawford. This will be followed by the presentation, The Founders of the University of the West Indies – A Brief History and a video presentation on the UWI. At 9:45 there will also be a presentation on ‘How to Make the Most of the University’. The presenter will be Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, Dr. Willard Pinnock Senior.
Orientation – Department of Government Postgraduate Students
The Department of Government, Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI Mona will host its Annual Orientation Seminar for post graduate students on Thursday, August 26. The seminar will be held in the Executive Lecture Theatre at the Mona School of Business in the Sir Alister McIntyre Building from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All new post graduate students in the Department of Government are invited to attend.
Tuition Fees Adjusted
Following on budget adjustment exercises as well as representations made by the Guild of Students at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, regarding the tuition fees for that Campus for the coming academic year, the Chancellor of the University established a committee to review the matter.
Mr. William Clarke, Chairman of the Mona Campus Council, chaired the committee with Dr. Marshall Hall and Mr. Lloyd Brown as the other members. The committee held various meetings with representatives of the University and the Guild, and has arrived at a conclusion agreed to by all parties.
Gordon Draper
The University of the West Indies (UWI), has learnt with regret of the passing of Mr. Gordon Draper, Alister McIntyre Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at the Mona School of Business who died on Wednesday, August 11 in London after falling ill.
Mona Academic Conference 2004
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will once again host the Mona Academic Conference from Friday August 27 to Sunday August 29 coinciding with the start of the 2004/2005 academic year. This year’s conference is being held under the theme “Revisiting Tertiary & Higher Education Policy in Jamaica: Towards Personal Gain or Public Good?”.
National Honours and Awards
Several members of staff and associates of the University of the West Indies have received National Honours and Awards from the Government in celebration of Jamaica’s 42nd Anniversary of Independence. Principal of the Mona Campus, Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Hall has been awarded the Order of Jamaica for his significant contribution to Education and Regional Development. Receiving the nation’s third highest honour, the Order of Merit is UWI Honorary Graduate, the Hon. Herb McKenly. He is being recognised for his distinguished service to Athletics locally and internationally.
