Exhibition in honour of Stuart Hall

“Culture, Politics, Race and Diaspora: the Thought of Stuart Hall”, theme of the Third Annual Conference in the series: Caribbean Reasonings” is also the theme of the exhibition currently mounted in the Main Library, University of the West Indies in honour of Stuart Hall. A distinguished and well-respected thinker, theorist, sociologist, and political activist, Hall was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1932. He attended Jamaica College and in 1950 was the recipient of both the Jamaica and Rhodes scholarships.

LACC

The Latin American - Caribbean Centre in collaboration with the Embassy of Colombia presents the sixth in the series of Colombian films entitled GOLPE DE ESTADIO (Stadium Coup). The film is a ccomedy, lasting one hour and 45 minutes and is in Spanish. The screening will be on Friday, July 1, 2004 at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities of Education U.W.I., Mona at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and all are invited.

Mona School of Business

The Mona School of Business will present scholarships to three outstanding students enrolled in the Master of Business Administration full-time programme for the academic year 2004 - 2005. This awards function will be held on June 28, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Alister McIntyre Building. Two of these scholarships are from the Scotia Bank Foundation in honour of Sir Alister McIntyre and the other is the Mona School of Business Award in honour of Lamour Wills, late employee of the School.

Official Launch the Master of Education Leadership in Early Childhood Development Programme

The School of Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will officially launch the Master of Education Leadership in Early Childhood Development Programme on Monday, June 28 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, beginning at 9:00 a.m. This is a web-based programme specifically designed to provide access to working early childhood development sector professionals throughout the Caribbean, especially candidates from non-campus territories and rural areas.

Paper Recycling Project at the University of the West Indies

The Maintenance Services Department of The University of the West Indies (UWI) in collaboration with Garbage Sanitation and Disposal Systems is in the process of implementing a cost-effective recycling project at the UWI, Mona campus. The project has as its primary objectives introducing an environmentally sound, sustainable mechanism for waste disposal at the UWI; reducing cost of waste collection and disposal at UWI; and generating additional income for expansion of programs implemented by the Maintenance Services Department.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)

The Office of Sponsored Research would like to inform interested persons of Open Calls for Proposals by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The RWJF is the U.S’s largest philanthropic organisation devoted exclusively to health and health care. The Foundation funds projects of many types, including service demonstrations, the gathering and monitoring of health related statistics, training and fellowship programs, policy analysis, health services research, technical assistance, public education, communications activities, and evaluations.

The Fourth General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences

The Fourth General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter will be held on June 30, 2004 in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5 beginning at 2:30 p.m. The keynote address titled “Tomorrow’s Computing: On Beyond Silicon” will be delivered by Dr. Daniel Coore, Lecturer in Computing Science, University of the West Indies, Mona. All members and interested persons are invited to attend. Persons who have been nominated for membership may pay their dues at the meeting and interested persons may apply for membership.

UWI Cross Campus Staff Games

The UWI Development and Endowment Fund, in association with the UWI Mona and Community Coop. Credit Union and Jamaica National Building Society presents the UWI Cross Campus Staff Games, July 16 to 24. The venue for the games which will involve participants from the three campuses of the University is the Mona Bowl on the Mona Campus. Staff members will compete in a range of events including athletics, soccer, netball, lawn tennis, cricket and table tennis. There will also be a beach lyme on Saturday, July 18 and the awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 24 at 8:00 p.m.

2004/2005 WIGUT (Jamaica) Executive

At its Annual General Meeting held April 16, 2004, members of the West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) Jamaica elected several members to serve on its executive for the period 2004/2005. The executive members are, President, Dr. Beverley Bryan; Vice President, Mr. Anthony Perry; General Secretary, Miss Dorothy Palmer; Assistant General Secretaries, Miss Pearline Dove, and Miss Jan Henry; and Treasurer, Miss Joy Dickenson.

Caribbean Conference on Philanthropy

The University of the West Indies Development and Endowment Fund (the UWI Fund) in collaboration with the National Center for Black Philanthropy Incorporated (Washington D.C., USA) will host the Caribbean Conference on Philanthropy, on September 26-29, 2004 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. The theme of the conference is “The Relevance of Philanthropy in Developing Nations.” This four-day conference will underscore the value of philanthropy to the growth and development of the Caribbean region.
