Introduction to Greenstone Digital Library Software

The Department of Library and Information Studies will host the course Introduction to Greenstone Digital Library Software from July 19 to 23. The course will be taught by Professor Fay Durrant. This five-day workshop will provide an initial overview of digital library software applications, and the features of the Greenstone Digital Library software. The main thrust of the workshop will be hands-on training in developing a digital collection.

Joseph Frederick Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Joseph Frederick, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences, at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and Director of the Advanced Fertility and Research Management Unit at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), to the rank of Professor of Reproductive Medicine, with effect from May 20, 2004.

Kolawole Soyibo Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Kolawole Soyibo, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, to the rank of Professor of Science Education, with effect from May 20, 2004.

New Appointments

The School of Continuing Studies, UWI announces the appointment of Dr Gillian Glean Walker as Resident Tutor, Jamaica Eastern and Dr. Julie Meeks Gardener as Tutor-Coordinator at the Caribbean Child Development Centre. Dr. Glean Walker replaces Mr. Kenneth Carter who retired in 2003 and her appointment took effect on May, 2004. Dr. Meeks Gardener replaces Mrs. Janet Brown who retired in 2003 and her appointment took effect on March 15, 2004.

New Executive Members - UWI Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter

The UWI Alumni Association held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 2. The newly elected members of the Executive Committee, effective August 1 to July 31, 2005 are as follows: Patricia Sutherland, President; Nadine Marriott, Vice President; A. Gilbert Bellamy, Treasurer; Paul Bryan, Assistant Treasurer. Executive members are Anna Matthews, Nicola Madden-Greg, Daemion McLean, Simeon Mohansingh, Livingston White, Berletta Forrester, Carol Graham, Suwannee Caine, Nadia Williams and Trevor Barrett.

Rex Nettleford Fellowship in Cultural Studies 2005

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the Rex Nettleford Fellowship in Cultural Studies, 2005.The Fellowship has been established by the Rhodes Trust to mark the centenary of the Rhodes Scholarships in the Caribbean and to honour the distinguished contribution of Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, UWI Vice Chancellor, to higher education and to the cultural life of the Caribbean. The prize will be awarded annually.

The Sixth Annual Intra-Regional Migration Seminar

The Sixth Annual Intra-Regional Migration Seminar organised by the Latin American Caribbean Centre, UWI, Mona will be held July 2-3 on the Mona Campus. This year the topic will be "The Socio-Economic and Cultural Impact of Caribbean Migration to Nicaragua". The opening ceremony will be at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 2 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. The main address will be given by Governor Guy Cox of the Regional Authority of Atlantic States in Nicaragua. Seminar sessions start at 10.00 a.m. on Saturday, July 3 in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library at Mona.

UWI Medical Alumni Association

The UWI Medical Alumni Association is inviting applications for the Association’s Class of ’68 Ben Crichlow Memorial Bursary. Applicants for the Ben Crichlow Memorial Bursary must be medical students in the clinical years. For further information please contact the Medical Alumni Secretariat, Faculty of Medical Sciences at 977-5800 or 927-1620-9 ext. 2322/2323. In addition, the UWI Medical Alumni Association, Canada Chapter is pleased announce that the 2004 Sir Harry Annamunthodo Prize in Surgery has been awarded to Dr. Karina Hew of the Class of 2004.

CARIMAC Summer School Programme

Over one hundred and fifty journalists from across the Caribbean will participate in the summer school programme at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), UWI, Mona beginning on Monday, June 28. The programme is now in its 22nd year and some twenty courses will be offered in the areas of journalism, including print, radio, television, multi-media, public relations and social marketing. Eight new courses have also been added including, Covering Crime, Publicity Strategies, Online Journalism, Business Reporting and Health Communication for Behaviour Change.
