Postgraduate Scholarships

Applications are now open for Postgraduate Scholarships being offered by the School of Graduate Studies and Research at UWI Mona for the 2004/2005 academic year. Preference will be given to graduates with at least an Upper Second Class honours degree. Scholarships are tenable at any UWI Campus and are normally for a period of two years. Application forms and details of awards are available from the Assistant Registrar, Office of Graduate Studies and Research at Mona. Closing date for the receipt of applications is April 30, 2004.

Two-Day Workshop

The Human Resources Management (HRM) Division in collaboration with the Campus Registrar’s Office, Mona and the Legal Unit, University of the West Indies will be hosting a two-day workshop entitled – “Revisiting the Employment Contract - UWI” on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 6 and 7, 2004 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge. A cross-section of the University community has been selected to attend this workshop, which will be facilitated by Miss Angela Robertson, Senior Partner, in the firm Livingston Alexander & Levy, and a well recognized specialist in the field of Labour Law in the region.

UWI Medical Alumni Association to Host Premiere of One Love

The long-anticipated film, ONE LOVE, with screenplay by Trevor Rhone and featuring a star-studded Jamaican cast, headlined by Ky-mani Marley and Cherine Anderson, will have its Jamaican premiere on Monday, April 5, at the Island Cinema in New Kingston. ONE LOVE tells the story of the forbidden love between a young Rasta reggae musician Kassa (Marley) and Serena (Anderson), the gospel singing daughter of a devout Pentecostal preacher (Winston Stona).

20th Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology at UWI Mona will host the 20th Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, April 7 at 5:00 p.m. The venue is the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at Mona. The lecturer this year will be Professor Mary Turner, Senior Research Fellow at the School of Advanced Study, Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London. Her topic will be Slave Rebels and Slave Revolutionaries. Members of the University community and the public are invited to attend.

Campus Security Services

Owing to an upsurge in motor car break-ins, Campus Security Services is reminding motorists on the Mona Campus not to leave their valuables such as handbags, books, parcels, in plain sight inside their locked vehicles. Valuable items may be secured in the trunk of the vehicle but motorists are advised that where possible, this should be done prior to parking on the Campus.

Distinguished Caribbean Anthropologist to Give Lecture

Lennox Honychurch, noted Dominican cultural anthropologist and historian, will be the Visiting Distinguished Lecturer at UWI, Mona, March 29 to 31, 2004. His lecture entitled “Re-inventing Ourselves: Caribbean Nationalism and the Creation of ‘Heritage’”, will be delivered on Monday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, and will be open to the public. The Faculty of Law Alumni and Friends Association is inviting interested persons to enter its logo competition. The association was launched recently and is based on the UWI Cave Hill Campus. Friday Forum on Child Development and Parenting

The UWI Caribbean Child Development Centre, School of Continuing Studies, in association with the Children’s Issues Coalition will host a Friday Forum on Child Development and Parenting on Friday, April 2 at 12:30 p.m. at the School of Continuing Studies Conference Room, Mona Campus. The presenter will be Dr. Polly Bowes-Howell, Principal, Stony Hill Primary School and the topic is Project on Early Intervention in Early Childhood: A Case Study of the Stony Hill Primary School. Interested persons should bring their lunch; (drinks will be provided).

Graduation Video Tapes and Photographs

UWI Graduates, who are interested in video tapes of the 2003 Graduation Ceremonies, may contact the Public Relations Office at 977-5941/935-8348/935-8692. The cost is $1200 per copy of the tape for the particular day you graduated. We also would like to remind graduates who took graduation photographs over the past fifteen (15) years, that they may be collected between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Fridays from the Public Relations Office, Gibraltar Hall Road, Mona Campus.

Staff Inter-Campus Games Fun Day

The Staff Inter-campus Games Committee at UWI Mona will kick off preparations for the July 2004 Inter-Campus Games to be held at Mona with a fundraising Fun Day. This will be held on Easter Monday, April 12 at the Mona Bowl starting at 9:00 a.m. The theme for the Fun Day is Staff Togetherness.
