Fundraiser for Haitian Refugees

A special event to raise funds for the Haitian refugees in Jamaica will be presented by a UNESCO Task Force organized to commemorate 2004 as the Year of the Struggle Against Slavery and the Bicentenary of the Haitian Revolution. The event, “The Griots Tales: a Historical Narrative of Slavery, Abolition and
Emancipation” is to be staged at the UTECH Sculpture Park on Saturday, March 20 at 6:00 p.m.

Graduation Photographs

The Public Relations Office wishes to remind graduates who took graduation photographs over the past fifteen (15) years, that they may be collected between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Fridays from the Public Relations Office, Gibraltar Hall Road, Mona Campus.

LACC Hosts Colombian Performing Group

The Latin American-Caribbean Centre in association with the Embassy of Colombia will host a concert and presentation by one of Colombia's well-known ballenato folklore groups "Los Hijos del Folclor" on Friday, March 19 at 7.00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona. The public is invited. Admission is free.

New Registry Website

The new website of the Registry, Mona Campus was launched by Campus Registrar, Mr. G. E. Anthony Falloon on Friday, February 20, 2004. The Registrar stated that this was a major step in the drive to improve the delivery of service to the customers of the University, both internal and external.

Perspectives on Education in the Caribbean

The 2003 issue of the Institute of Education Annual 'Perspectives on Education in the Caribbean', edited by Ruby King and Halden Morris, is now available at the Institute's Publications Unit, middle floor of the School of Education building. The cost is $300 each. The Annual is divided into four parts: The first, Viewpoint, is the text of a presentation, Challenges Facing the OECS Education Sector: The Case of St. Kitts and Nevis, made by Timothy Harris, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Education in St. Kitts and Nevis at the Mona Campus in 2003.

The Julien Fedon Memorial Prize

The UWI School of Continuing Studies – Grenada Centre and the Institute for People’s Enlightenment in Grenada are inviting applications for the annual Julien Fedon Memorial Prize for outstanding work by UWI students in History. The student must be from one of the countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). This student may be either at the Bachelors or Post Graduate level from any UWI campus.

UTCWI Founders’ Day Celebrations

The United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) will host it annual Founders’ Day Celebrations starting on Monday, March 15 with a lecture by Dr. Christopher Morse, the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. His topic will be “The Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer”. The lecture will take place at 11:00 a.m. in Classroom 4-5. Professor Morse will deliver the lecture again on Thursday, March 16 starting at 9:00 a.m.

Advent Fellowship, UWI Mona presents Concert Season 2004

Advent Fellowship, a students’ group at UWI Mona, is mounting its annual concert session this month. This year’s production is titled Now and the concert season is designed to help raise funds for various charity and missionary activities of the Fellowship. The concert dates are March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre, UWI; March 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mandeville Seventh Day Adventist Church Hall, Mandeville; and March 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lorna Nembhard Auditorium Montego Bay Community College.

Commuting Students’ Lounge Activities

The Commuting Students’ Committee will launch the Commuting Students Outreach Club on March 18 on the Lawns of the Commuting Students’ Lounge from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Outreach activity will be with The Hope Institute, a residential care facility for cancer patients. Students are encouraged to support this venture and to join the club as it has scope for inclusion on their co-curricular transcripts. The club meets at Commuting Students’ Lounge at 2:00 p.m. each Thursday during the Semester.
