7th William Dennis Memorial Lecture
The 7th William Dennis Memorial Lecture takes place June 19, 2008 at 5 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Professor Henri Ford, Vice President and Chief of Surgery at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles, will deliver the lecture. Professor Ford’s lecture is titled “Necrotizing Enterocolitis: New Insights into Pathogenesis.”
International Conference Launched at the Crossroads of History
Tourism figures are expected to rise in July with the staging of the seventh international cultural studies conference of the Association for Cultural Studies (ACS). The ACS is bringing their biennial conference, 2008 ACS Crossroads, to the shores of the Caribbean from July 3-7. Over 650 international participants from 68 countries expected to attend.
Professor Verene Shepherd Joins SEPHIS Programme
Dr. Verene Shepherd, Professor of Social History, The University of the West Indies, Mona has been invited to become a member of the Steering Committee (STC) of The South - South Programme for Research on the History of Development (SEPHIS), funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation. She attends a series of meetings, and a Sephis-organized Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan titled "Women and the Public Sphere” this week and will also be a part of the Conference taking place on June 18-20.
The Competitiveness of Caribbean Economies: Emerging Issues and Future Directions
“The Competitiveness of Caribbean Economies: Emerging Issues and Future Directions” is the title of seminar and Journal Launch being hosted by the Department of Management Studies and the Office of the Principal, The University of the West Indies, Mona. The event takes place on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 9:30 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The keynote speaker will be Ambassador the Hon. Dr. Richard L. Bernal.
Staff Photographic Exhibition
The photographic talent of three members of the University community is on display at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts Centre from June 2-30, 008. The display consists of work from Ruth Wilson, recently retired from the Examination Section of the Registry, Dr. Otelemate G. Harry, Lecturer, Department of Language, Linguistics & Philosophy and Dr. Clinton Hutton, Lecturer in the Department of Government.
UWI Open Campus and ICS to Host Screening and Lecture by Howard University Professor
The UWI Open Campus in collaboration with the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS), UWI, Mona, will host a screening and lecture by Steven Torriano Berry, Professor of Film and Television Production at Howard University. This event will take place on Tuesday, June 3 at 6 pm in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.
Professor Verene Shepherd re-elected President of the ACH
Dr. Verene Shepherd, Professor of Social History, UWI, Mona and recent Chair of the Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee, has been re-elected President of the Association of Caribbean Historians (ACH). Shepherd, who was Chair for the usual 2-year period, was asked to serve a further year at the 40th Annual Conference held in Suriname recently.
Foreign Language Courses
The Language Lab at the University of the West Indies, Mona offers non-credit summer courses in Spanish and Japanese. Classes in Basic Japanese run from June 2 to 20 on Mondays to Fridays, 5-7 pm. The cost is $6,500.00. Classes in Basic Spanish I and II are scheduled for June 9 to August 18, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 - 7 pm. The cost is $8,500.

“Tradeoffs in Objective and Subjective Performance Evaluation”
The Department of Management Studies, UWI, Mona will host a lecture titled “Tradeoffs in Objective and Subjective Performance Evaluation: A Case Study Examining the Validity of Agency Theory Predictions”. Professor Tom Tyson, Professor of Accounting, Bittner School of Business, St. John Fisher College, New York will deliver the lecture on Wednesday, June 4, at 11 am at SR16.
