Risk and Responsibility for Education-abroad Programme Seminar
The UWI’s Office of Administration and Special Initiatives in collaboration with Queen’s University in Ontario will host a seminar entitled “Risk and Responsibility for Education-abroad Programmes: the Caribbean Perspective” from Wednesday, June 22 to Friday, June 24. The overall aim of the seminar is to discuss specific issues that have proven to be or that might be challenging in the Caribbean context, for persons involved in study abroad programmes. Participants will also explore a range of feasible approaches to addressing such issues.
Seminar for Aspiring Leaders
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will host some 30 young persons at a one week development seminar for aspiring leaders to be held at the Rex Nettleford Hall of Residence over the period June 20 – 24. Using the theme “Future Caribbean Leadership in the Age of Globalization’, the seminar will provide an opportunity for tertiary and higher education student leaders to cultivate an academic approach to leadership through exposure to contemporary leadership theories. The seminar is also expected to enhance their individual leadership potential.
Seventh Intra-regional Migration Seminar
The University of the West Indies, through its Latin American Caribbean Centre hosts its Seventh Annual Seminar on the Jamaican Diaspora and its impact both locally and regionally from July 8 - 9. The Opening ceremony will take place on Friday July 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, UWI and on Saturday the session will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, N1. This year’s seminar will focus on ‘The Socio-economic and Cultural Impact of Caribbean Migration to Belize and Honduras”.
Two-day Workshop on Protocol and Special Events Planning
The Public Relations Office, UWI, Mona presents: Proceed with Confidence in a Globalised Environment: a two-day workshop on Protocol and Special Events Planning on Tuesday, June 28, and Wednesday, June 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The venue is the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Topics to be covered include National and University Protocol, Official Forms of Address, Order of Precedence, Realistic Budgeting, Seating Arangements, the Art of Fine Dining and much more. Presenters include Ambassador Madge Barrett, Dr. Oswald Harding and Mrs. Marigold Harding.
UWI Bookshop Annual Stock-taking Exercise
Please be advised that the University Bookshop will be closed for its Annual Stock-taking Exercise starting Tuesday June 28 at 1:00 p.m. and will reopen on Monday, July 4.
The service of phone cards sales by Management Control Systems will however continue during this exercise.
LACC presents Cuban Films – June 14-17
The UWI Latin American-Caribbean Centre (LACC) in association with the Embassy of Cuba in Jamaica is pleased to invite you to view two Cuban films on June 14 and 17 respectively in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre in the Faculty of Humanities and Education starting at 7.00 p.m. The films are in Spanish with English subtitles. On Tuesday, June 14 the movie "A SUCCESSFUL MAN" and the documentary "MY HEART" will be shown. On Friday, June 17, the movie will be "PLAFF" and the documentary "LOS HIJOS DE BARAGUA".

This year’s seminar will focus on ‘The Socio-economic and Cultural Impact of Caribbean Migration to Belize and Honduras”. The seminar series was launched in 2000 with a view to tracing the socio-economic and cultural impact of the intra-regional movement of English-speaking Caribbean nationals on both the receiving and sending countries.
The UWI Alumni Association Elects New Executive for the 2005/2006
The UWI Alumni Association has elected a new executive for the 2005/2006 academic year. The new President is Mrs. Nadine Marriott, who will be assisted by Miss Suwanee Cain as Vice President. Conference in Honour of Professor Barry Chevannes
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work in conjunction with the Faculty of Social Sciences at the UWI Mona Campus will host a conference in honour of Professor Barry Chevannes’ lifetime of scholarly work, service and achievement. The conference is scheduled to be held in Kingston, Jamaica on January 19-21, 2006.
