Piano Recital-Halvard White
There will be a Piano Recital by Dr. Halvard White on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA) at 6 pm. He will be performing the following works- the second scherzo and two etudes by Chopin, two preludes by Debussy, Jeux d’eau by Ravel, Barcarola by Chavez, an intermezzo by Brahms, three preludes by Rachmaninov, three American preludes and an Argentine dance by Ginastera.
Tickets for the Recital are available at the door at a cost of $800 each. The public is invited to attend.
Department of Library and Information Studies Orientation Meeting
The Department of Library and Information Studies invites all new and returning Library and Information Studies majors to their annual orientation meeting on Thursday, September 3 at 2 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1). The Orientation will provide an opportunity to learn about the activities and developments in the Department and to meet staff and students.
Orientation 2009
The University of the West Indies, Mona Orientation 2009 starts on Monday, August 24 at 10 a.m. with an Opening Ceremony at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. The exercise continues until Thursday, August 27, 2009 and will entail interesting discussions, campus tours, rap sessions, sporting and other recreational activities and a Freshers’ Fete. All first year students are invited to attend.
The Orientation activities are designed to familiarize first year students with the University campus, student development programmes and activities and to assist students in adjusting to university experience.
Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health
The Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health (OESH) Programme in the Department of Chemistry at the University of the West Indies, Mona offers a 30-hour Certificate Programme in the Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health starting from September 9.
The course covers the basics of Occupational Health and Safety and addresses the following topics: OSH Legislation, Hazard Recognition, Evaluation and Control, Conducting Workplace Inspections, Accident Investigation and Communication, Resolving OESH Workplace Issues. UWISON collaborates on HIV Risk Reduction Project
The UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) in collaboration with New York University College of Nursing and University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing is in the third year of the Randomized Controlled Behavioural Intervention entitled “Mother Daughter HIV Risk Reduction Project funded by the National Institutes of Health, USA.
The behavioural intervention is culturally & developmentally appropriate, gender specific, theory-driven and involves skill-building; it aims to reduce adolescents’ girls sexual risk behaviours and increase mothers’ sexual risk communication and their parental monitoring and supervision.
Computer Animation Summer Workshop
The Department of Computing will host a series of workshops on Computer Animation which will run from August 10-14 (Monday – Friday) from 10.00 a.m. – 4.30 p.m. in the Computing Department Lab (3rd floor, Life Sciences Building). The cost is $5000. A maximum of 14 persons will be accepted.
In this short course, persons will learn Basic computer animation, how to develop structured animation story outlines and storyboards, how to implement a story as an animation and program and how to make the animation interact with the viewer.
The emphasis will be on developing positive Jamaican/Caribbean content and positive, non-violent content in general.
Science Camp at the University of the West Indies Geology Museum
The University of the West Indies Geology Museum (UWIGM) will be running a Science Camp for children aged 8-12 from Monday August 10 through Friday August 21. There will be daily activities from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. covering topics such as Volcanoes & Earthquakes, Rock identification and building rock collections, Fossil identification and experiments, Mapping techniques using hand held G.P.S. Units, The geology of the Mona Campus and Weather & Climate Change.
The daily camp will expose students to the fundamentals of the earth and environmental sciences using field trips, museum excursions, hands-on lab experiments, computer packages and exercises using the World Wide Web.
Public Lecture
There will be an Ethics Mini symposium and Public Lecture on Friday August 14th. The Mini symposium will be held from 2.00 p.m. to 400 p.m. in the Interfaculty Lecture Theatre and the Public Lecture from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. at the Undercroft. The theme for the Mini Symposium and Public Lecture is "Beyond the boundaries: Developing a University Ethics Centre"
The Public Lecture will be given by Professor the Hon Owen Morgan (Retired and Former Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences) and the topic is "Ethics and the Academy: Universities' duties in an open society"
Cultural Representation of the Caribbean in Children’s Books
The Department of Library and Information Studies will be hosting a public lecture entitled “A we dis? “Cultural Representation of the Caribbean in Children’s Book by Dr. Cherrell Shelley-Robinson on Thursday September, 10 2009 at 5.30 p.m. at the Neville Hall lecture Theatre (N1), UWI Mona Campus.
Smoker 2009
The Class of 2012 presents Smoker 2009 “Knot the truth: the truth is rarely pure and never simple” from September 17-20, 2009. Smoker is an annual charity event put on by third year medical students of the University of the West Indies Mona and is considered to be one of the oldest cultural traditions at the University. It generally takes the form of a theatrical performance showcasing the talent of the M.B.B.S. students and includes drama, song and dance. This year, our Smoker production features a young man who grew up without his knowing father and decides to go on a "father-seeking" path which only leads to more questions than answers. A total of six (6) shows exhibiting two brilliant casts will be held at The Philip Sherlock Centre for The Creative Arts.
