Building Trustworthy Learning with AI

The recent dramatic evolution of AI, has given rise to Generative AI and its poster child, ChatGPT. This new breed can adapt, analyze data, and create content and is rapidly becoming a game-changer for business.

MSBM hosted a series of events during the week of May 27, 2024 to help Businesses assess current tools and invest in human-AI collaboration and continuous learning. The series included three sessions.

The first session was held on May 28 and targeted UWI faculty members. The topic explored was "Building Trustworthy Learning with AI."

This session delved into the ideologies surrounding the use of AI-driven technologies within tertiary institutions such as the UWI Mona campus and emphasized that the future of education is a careful interleaving of tools and technologies with the context of human sense.

The second was held on May 30 under the theme “Transforming Business Value through Gen AI." This session targeted members of industry. The major thrust of the session focused on the idea that the future of business is a partnership with AI. Businesses must carefully assess current tools and invest in human-AI collaboration and continuous learning. This will be key to navigating the exciting but uncertain path ahead.

Both sessions were led by Dr. Sameer Verma, Professor and Chair, Information Systems, San Francisco State University. Prof. Verma is well known for his research on the diffusion and adoption of innovative technologies. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Drupal Association and WiRED International, and actively works in a consulting capacity with San Francisco Bay Area technology companies.

In addition, a 5-Day Introductory Applied AI Workshop was held during the period May 27-31.  MSBM and the Department of Computing, UWI, collaborated to deliver the Workshop at the Mona Campus.

This targeted UWI Data Science students as well as a select group from industry. The workshop is part of MSBM’s efforts to support the building of technical capabilities for a local ethical AI community and research capacity that can contribute AI artifacts to provide more diverse, context-relevant and value-added digital public goods.

The facilitator/trainer was Marcos Cuevas, from Barcelona, Spain who presented virtually.

"With over 15 years of experience in the tech industry, Marcos Cuevas is a seasoned product leader and entrepreneur with a passion for solving real-world problems with technology. He specializes in artificial intelligence and data analysis, and is fascinated by their potential to drive social change and inform corporate decision-making."

The participants explored Large Language Models (commonly called LLMs) such as GPT-4 through practical exercises, and a project on emerging Caribbean social impact topics such as gender equality narratives, migration discourse and public health analysis.

From hands-on coding sessions to exploring large language models, this workshop was a whirlwind of knowledge and creativity. Mr. Cuevas taught the diverse group of participants to utilize LLMs to address social impact topics. Participants learned real-time data collection through APIs, prompt engineering, and model fine-tuning. The workshop culminated in an extended multi-week Hackathon where teams were challenged to employ the power of generative AI to develop social monitors  - innovative solutions for monitoring, analyzing, and understanding social conversations, behaviors and events through mainstream media articles. The best project(s) will be featured live for a year, providing a unique opportunity for continuous learning and real-world impact.
