Professor Barbara Bailey has been Regional
Coordinator of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies,
UWI since 1995. Prior to that she was the specialist lecturer
in Curriculum Studies in the School of Education, Mona. In recent
years Dr. Bailey’s teaching and research focus has been
on ‘Gender and Education Studies’, with particular
emphasis on gender issues in education and the relationship of
educational outputs to outcomes in the economic, social and political
spheres for either sex. She has published a number of articles
addressing various issues related to this topic including a monograph
in a series put out by UNESCO as part of the ‘Education
for All in the Caribbean Assessment 2000’ titled Gender
and Education in Jamaica: What About the Boys?
Professor Bailey has been part of the international
women’s movement for the past two decades. She was
a member of the Government of Jamaica’s delegation
to the 3rd World Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, the 1995
4th World Conference in Beijing, China and the 2000 Beijing
+5 Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly
in New York. She was also a consultant to CARICOM member
states at preparatory meetings leading up to the New York
meeting. Over the period 2000 to 2003 Professor Bailey was
also the Government of Jamaica’s representative on
the United Nations Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Consultative
Committee.
