Public Services

The Public Services section offers services such as circulation, reserve, periodicals, reference and interlibrary loan. Its main function is to enhance the goal of the University by providing the Library's patrons with timely access to information in all formats.
Circulation is responsible for providing patrons access to the Library’s material and controlling the usage. The staff checks material in and out, maintains and monitors the patron records, collect overdue fines, and maintains the stacks.
The reserve collection comprises of books and articles placed in the Library by faculty members to be accessed and used by students in their classes.
Material of all formats, not owned by the Library may be borrowed through interlibrary loan. The service is available to UWI graduate and undergraduate students, staff and faculty.
The Loan and Reference Section provides research and reference assistance to UWI students, faculty and visiting researchers in keeping with the Library's mission of supporting teaching, learning and research activities on the Mona Campus. Patrons may visit the Reference Desk or may use the virtual reference service. Individualized research consultations are also available to all users by appointment.
Technical Services
The Technical Services Section handles the ordering, receiving, cataloging and processing of books, periodicals, and other materials for the library.
Systems

The Systems Unit is responsible for the use of technology throughout the Libraries to meet current needs and future directions. Systems supports the hardware and software needs of the library. Specific responsibilities include:

The installation, configuration, and maintenance of computers, printers scanners for staff and students

Management of the computer laboratories in all the Main Library and the Branch Libraries, including Pharos reservation and printing system.

Management of the Libraries' integrated library system, Aleph and related products

Digital library initiatives

Installation of Library related software and providing user support to Library and staff in the use of these technologies.

Interfacing with Mona Information Technology Services (MITS) to ensure that the library is integrated into Campuses overall ITC strategy.
Preservation & Conservation

The primary purpose of the Preservation Section is to preserve, protect, and extend the usable life of the Library's collections. The current preservation programme entails:

This section brings together a number of the Library's special and unique research collections including the West Indies Collection and the University Collections.

The staff of the Information Literacy Unit instructs and assists users in the research process. Assistance is also provided in selecting the right information resources in both print and electronic formats, and helping students to develop life-long information-seeking skills.
