JN Donates Books To UWI

Four months after the launch of his book My 50 Years in Photography, renowned Jamaican photographer Ray Chen, in collaboration with the JN Foundation, donated 10 copies of his recent work to the library at the University of the West Indies (UWI).

In a handover ceremony at the UWI, Mona, the affable Chen expressed optimism that his photographic legacy, while piquing students' interest, might also stimulate their creative instincts to view Jamaica as a cultural melting pot and showcase its diversity in people, rituals, and places.

Regional Conference on Development of Education Being Planned

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Caribbean leaders have endorsed a three-day meeting to discuss the development of education in the region.

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell said the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Sir Hilary Beckles had made a major presentation to regional leaders on education during their annual summit that ended here over the weekend.

“We talking about leveraging our knowledge regionally and internationally, and not in just one area,” he said, adding that his regional colleagues “were extremely impressed”.

The Flipped Classroom: A New Education Model Enabled by Technology

Educators and school administrators are talking about a new paradigm in education: the flipped classroom. A flipped classroom follows a blended instructional model in which prerecorded lectures are viewed by students at home, and classroom time is reserved for the application and practice of these concepts.

Education Minister Emphasises Importance of TVET

 

Caribbean Educators and legislators have been commended for the progress made to standardise vocational education, and the impact this is having on human capital development and economic competitiveness in the region.

Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, in his address at the 2nd International Conference on Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the Caribbean, at the Hilton Rose Hall Hotel and Spa, in St. James, on May 13, emphasized that the region must respond to changes in the global job market and economic landscapes.

TOTAL Fuels Education

 

STUDENTS of the University of West Indies (UWI) are to benefit from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between TOTAL Jamaica Ltd and the tertiary institution, on Wednesday.

The pact, which takes effect in August, will see UWI students integrated into TOTAL's workforce and given the necessary real-world experience.

Dr Michael Faulkner, managing director of TOTAL Jamaica, said the move was part of his organisation's mantra.

USAID, Education Ministry Aim To Improve Literacy Among Parents

Residents of Jacks River community in St Mary have praised an initiative between the United Stated Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Education (MoE), which aims to improve literacy rates in Jamaica by developing a series of communal education centres for disadvantaged parents.

Aspiring School Principals Programme

January 3, 2015 --THE MINISTRY of Education has taken another step to expand the pool of persons trained as prospective principals in order to improve the quality of leadership in the country’s public schools.

The National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL), through a newspaper advertisement, is inviting qualified educators to apply for entry to round two of the Aspiring Principals Programme that is offered through the University of the West Indies.

Grade Four Literacy and Numeracy Tests Pushed Back to June 30 and July 1

 

This year’s sitting of the Grade Four Literacy and Numeracy Tests has been pushed back to June 30 and July 1 to make up for the time lost in September and October, due to the impact of the Chikungunga virus (CHIKV). 

The sitting of the tests was initially scheduled for June 4 and 5.

Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, said hundreds of students and teachers across the island, were severely affected by CHIKV last term, and were unable to attend school.

He was addressing a meeting with senior journalists at the Alhambra Inn Hotel in St. Andrew.

CHASE signs MOU for training of early childhood teachers

THE Culture, Health, Arts, Sports, Education (CHASE) Fund has formalised its funding arrangement with six teacher-training institutions for the provision of scholarships in early childhood education at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

Under the initiative, CHASE has to date awarded 3,383 scholarships valued at over $284 million at the undergraduate level, and in 2014/15, has committed $60 million for teacher training, which includes bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as doctorates at local and overseas institutions.

Experimental Learning Programme Launched for Grades 5 and 6 Students

Up to 10,000 Grade 5 and 6 students will, this school year, have the opportunity to get a practical feel of how the economy functions, through an experimental learning programme, which was launched on October 28, by Junior Achievement Jamaica (JAJ), at the Caenwood Centre, in Kingston.
