Our department comprises of three sections, Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. The largest section, Surgery, comprises subspecialty divisions including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine. We provide training at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, teaching in both didactic and clinical practice nationally and regionally.
The vision and mission of our department is aligned with that of university in that we aim to be an outstanding student-centered department in an excellent university rooted in the Caribbean, and we are in the business of advancing learning, creating new knowledge, and fostering innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world in the fields of surgery, radiology, anaesthesia & intensive care, and emergency medicine.
Our radiology section offers general radiological services to the public at large while providing training in modern imaging modalities for postgraduate medical doctors, medical students, radiographers and other groups.
Our Anaesthetic Department is the largest in the country and is responsible for the day-to-day activities of two modern ICU units of a total of 20 beds.
Our Emergency Medicine Team provides modern timely interventions to over 50,000 patients annually and is active in research, the teaching of medical students, emergency room technicians, and other allied health care workers involved in the emergency care of patients.
We are equipped with an excellent cadre of staff inclusive of professors, consultants/lecturers, associate lecturers, administrative and technical support staff. The majority of our younger members of staff are fellowship trained and committed to providing excellence in teaching and learning, research and in the execution of their clinical duties. In addition to promoting academic excellence we support socially accountable activities such as outreach clinics and we continue to establish meaningful partnership within the UWI community, the government and NGOs regionally and internationally.
We offer didactic teaching for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelors of surgery (MBBS) programme, offered in the first two years which is accompanied by clinical exposure component which commences in the third year of the programme until completion. For our Doctor of Medicine [DM] degree programme we offer full-time training to the graduates of the MBBS programme regionally, in the following specialities:
