The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, has launched the Fi Wi Science Initiative, a groundbreaking effort to promote STEM education and careers in Jamaica. The initiative was officially launched on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Science Lecture Theatre 3, with support from the private sector via Conrad Douglas & Associates Ltd./Environmental Science & Technology Ltd., represented by Dr. Conrad Douglas.
The Government of Jamaica (GOJ) through the National Commission on Science and Technology represented by Dr. Isaac Morrison indicated in his remarks, their intention to support the initiative.
The Fi Wi Science Initiative aims to popularize STEM education and careers by showcasing Jamaica’s rich scientific heritage through murals and a dedicated website. It promotes Jamaican scientists and science icons to provide role models and celebrate their contributions, while also addressing misconceptions about science and scientists to improve public perception and engagement. Research indicates a global decline in STEM graduates, and this initiative seeks to counter that trend by increasing awareness and inspiring young minds to pursue scientific careers.
The event highlighted two major components of the initiative. The first was the unveiling of the Fi Wi Science Website, a digital platform featuring a database of Jamaican scientists and valuable STEM-related resources. The website was developed with seed funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The second component was the launch of the Mural Competition, which offers artists the opportunity to contribute designs celebrating Jamaican science icons. The winning murals will be displayed on campus to inspire future scientists. Private sector and government entities are encouraged to support the production of these murals and contribute information about their science employees to expand the database.
The launch event was attended by approximately 50 guests, including representatives from key organizations such as the National Commission on Science & Technology, the Scientific Research Council, the Ministry of Education, Youth & Information, the Science Teachers Association of Jamaica, the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sport, the Natural History Museum of Jamaica, the National Gallery of Jamaica, the National Environment and Planning Agency, the Forestry Department, the Planning Institute of Jamaica, and the University of Technology (UTech) represented by Prof. S. Omoregie. The UWI community was well-represented, with remarks from Deputy Principal Dr. Tomlin Paul, as well as faculty members.
The event seamlessly blended science with artistic expression. Guests enjoyed musical performances by Dr. Dexter-Dean Colquhoun (Marine Biologist and accomplished keyboardist) and Dr. Lilieth Nelson (Chemist and former UWI Singers vocalist). Their performances underscored the initiative’s theme of integrating science with creative arts.
With the Fi Wi Science Initiative now in motion, the FST at The UWI Mona is committed to fostering a culture of scientific appreciation and excellence. The initiative seeks to inspire future generations, celebrate Jamaican scientific achievements, and bridge the gap between science and society.
