March 8, 2022 is designated International Women’s Day under the theme, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. This year acknowledges the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all. Given their position on the front line of the climate-change battle, women and girls are uniquely positioned to be agents of change and to take actives roles in climate decision-making. In Jamaica, women are also responding to Sustainable Development Goal 13 which urges us to take action to combat climate change and its impacts by leading the call for climate change resilience activities through academia, industry, governance and policy and social development. For decades, The UWI has served as a hub for equipping women and girls with the knowledge and skillsets to propose, design and implement solutions for tackling climate change related issues.  Today, the Faculty stands resolute in supporting and promoting gender equality in all circles and therefore continues to serve as a reservoir for nurturing and producing a strong cadre of female students, academics, alumni and other STEM professionals who are making global impact aligned with mitigating the effects of Climate Change for sustainable development.

The Faculty of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Climate Change Division (Ministry of Housing, Urban Renewal, Environment and Climate) therefore joins the global platform to recognise all women and girls in Climate Change. Today, we highlight thirty (30) Jamaican women who are thought-leaders advocating for societal resilience to Climate Change.
