The University of the West Indies proudly celebrates Abishua Johnson, one of the Valedictorians for the Class of 2025, whose academic journey exemplifies perseverance, innovation, and service-driven leadership. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Johnson entered university as a first-generation student with no prior coding experience and rapidly distinguished himself through exceptional academic performance. His achievements include consistent Academic Commendations, recognition on the Dean’s List, and induction into the Computing Department’s Honour Society—a testament to his discipline, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to excellence.

Beyond the classroom, Johnson has demonstrated a passion for technology with social impact. He led The UWI Mona team at the international DESRIST25 Conference, where they presented eLife, an open-source platform designed to streamline proof-of-life verification for Jamaican pensioners, addressing a critical national need through thoughtful digital innovation. His leadership and technical skills were further recognised with top honours at the Jamaica Artificial Intelligence Association Hackathon and accolades at the BARITA Skills Optimisation Challenge. Selected for the prestigious CariSurg Surgical Robotics Programme at the University of Leeds, Johnson contributed to advancing AI and robotics solutions tailored to Caribbean healthcare, positioning regional innovation on the global stage.

Equally impressive is Johnson’s commitment to community and personal development. He founded The UWI Recreational Tennis Club, fostering wellness and camaraderie on campus, and served as a French language tutor, reflecting a well-rounded approach to leadership and service. Abishua Johnson’s journey—from novice coder to valedictorian and international presenter—embodies the spirit of UWI excellence. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Abishua on this remarkable achievement and look forward to the transformative impact he will continue to make in technology, healthcare, and beyond.
