One Health, One Global Environment Conference

Monday, October 2, 2023 - 8:00am

The goals of the ‘One Health, One Global Environment Conference’ are to exchange knowledge and data to further enhance understanding of the role that the environmental health discipline can play in addressing One Health issues globally. For optimizing the 2023 One Health, One Global Environment Conference, we arrived at an overarching objective: to enhance the gender diversity and scientific expertise of our environmental health attendees working in an emerging one health research area of increasing global health importance. Our 2017 meeting was valuable for establishing a foundation, especially with bridge building between environmental health (EH), veterinary public health and biosecurity communities; however, representation and perspectives from leading women scientists in environmental health as well as junior scientists of all disciplines were not as abundant as desired through the regular abstract/registration process.

Our efforts for our 2023 meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals culminating in SDG 17: Partnerships. In addition, support was obtained by the U.S. NIH for keynote speakers to align presentations with the strategic plans of the U.S. government’s National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases for performing collaborative global health research (NIEHS) and engaging in international research partnerships (NIAID). Scientifically, the thematic areas of persons we aim to support by this proposal will be engaged in topics related to host-pathogen/host-reservoir interactions in contaminated environments or workplaces. Expertise in cumulative exposure studies, microbiome studies, and systems approaches to understanding antimicrobial resistance will be presented by keynote speakers and junior scientists.
