Literacy Symposium 2013

The School of Education in the Faculty of Humanities and Education presents Literacy Symposium 2013 under the theme, Literacy for Peace, Progress and Prosperity.  The keynote speakers are: Professor Beverly Bryan from UWI Mona's School of Education, and Dr. Gloria Boutte of the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education from the University of South Carolina.
Conference themes include: Literacy and social justice; literacy and violence mitigation; critical literacy;  Interventions, inititiatives and innnovation in literacy development for social and economic change.

Workshop on Conflict Management

The Workshop is a collaborative effort by the School of Education and Operation Save Jamaica. The participants are teachers and community organizers from schools and organizations in volatile communities. These participants are confronted on a daily basis, with situations of unresolved hurt and resentment among groups which are usually played out in more and more violence and which presents roadblocks to meaningful change.This Workshop in Restorative Justice is aimed at providing the participants with a tool which seeks to repair harm and heal hurts caused by acts of violence, through a process of helping parties in a dispute to face each other, speak and listen to each other and arrive at their own solutions.

Health Awareness Symposium

Third Sport Anti-Doping Workshop

The Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Norman Manley Law School, in collaboration with Jeffrey Benz, former General Counsel, United States Olympic Committee present the 'Anti-doping in Sport 2013' workshop.This third in the series of anti-doping in sport workshops to be staged on the grounds of the campus, will examine the Jamaican programme for strengths and weaknesses, with a focus on strengthening the weaknesses, real or perceived.The workshop will feature the controversial and well respected Richard 'Dick' Pound, who  has openly questioned the bona fides of the Jamaican testing and assurance programme. The programme will then present an opportunity to dialogue with Pound and other presenters.

Elect Her 2013

Elect Her is a one-day training programme that encourages university women to run for student government on their campus in the hopes that they will later run for elected office at the highest levels of leadership.
The Mary Seacole Hall with the help of the American Association of University Women will host an Elect Her training session for 100 participants from universities and colleges across Jamaica along with sixth form students of select secondary schools. UWI Mona is the only campus outside of North America that hosts this renowned annual event.
