Regional Body Accredits, Lauds, UWI Medical Programme

The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) has fully accredited The University of the West Indies’ Medical Programme, lauding it for its “outstanding students, enthusiastic and committed teachers including residents (house staff).

In a letter to the Vice Chancellor of the UWI, Professor Nigel Harris, the Board of CAAM-HP noted that “graduates of the MBBS course of UWI, achieve high international standards at the time of graduation.”

Global Change and Caribbean Vulnerability:Environment, Economy and Society at risk?

Global Change and Caribbean Vulnerability: Environment, Economy and Society at risk? is the theme of an international seminar to take place at the University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus from July 24-28, 2006. The seminar is part of the joint Regional meeting to be held by the Department of Geography & Geology, UWI Mona Campus, in conjunction with the Climate Change Research Group and the Developing Areas Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers.

Four Receive Prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the 2005/2006 academic year will go to four members of staff based at the Cave Hill, Mona and St Augustine campuses of The University of the West Indies. At Mona, the awardees are Professor Helen Jacobs of the Department of Chemistry, for Research Accomplishments, and Mr. Cordel Nelson, Senior Assistant Registrar (Examinations) in the Registry for Service to the University Community.

THIRTEEN TO BE AWARDED HONORARY DEGREES AT 2006 UWI GRADUATION CEREMONIES

Two women are among the persons to be conferred with honorary doctorates at the UWI graduation ceremonies in October and November later this year. Miss Charmaine Gardner, Chief Executive Officer of Carasco & Sons will be honoured at the Cave Hill ceremonies while at the St. Augustine Campus Antiguan author, Miss Jamaica Kincaid, will be similarly honoured during the St. Augustine Campus ceremonies. Five persons are slated to be conferred with honorary degrees at the Mona Campus ceremonies, whereas four each are to be conferred at the ceremonies at the Cave Hill and St.

UWI COMMENCES PREPARATION OF A NEW STRATEGIC PLAN

The University of the West Indies has embarked on the preparation of a new Strategic Plan that will shape the development of the regional institution for the period 2007-2012. The process commenced formally with a two-day event held at the Mona Campus on May 1-2, 2006.

The Hon. Robert Pickersgill to open 5th annual Caribbean Reasonings at UWI, Mona

The Hon. Robert Pickersgill will represent Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller at the opening of the 5th annual Caribbean Reasonings conference on Friday June 9, at 6pm, at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.
The conference, which has as its theme; Politics, Activism and History: The Life and Times of Richard Hart, is being hosted by the Centre for Caribbean Thought (CCT), in association with the Africana Studies Department Brown University, Rhode Island.

UWI SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH BREAKFAST CLUB LTD

The Finance and General Purposes Committee of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus at its meeting held on March 22, 2006, formally approved arrangements made between the Mona Campus and Breakfast Club Company Limited (BCL) aimed at developing Radio Mona into a profitable venture. Under the terms of the Agreement, the UWI and BCL have established a new company, Universal Media Company Limited to develop the station.

ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING OF THE UWI COUNCIL HOLDS MARATHON SESSION

Chaired by Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, the Council of The University of the West Indies held its annual business meeting over two days – Thursday April 20 to Friday April 21, 2006. The sixty-two member body was augmented by members of the Chancellor’s Task Force on Governance, which presented to Council for consideration, its recommendations for reform of the governing bodies of the institution, including the Council itself.

INCREASES IN TUITION FEES AT UWI HELD BELOW NINE PERCENT

The Council of the University of the West Indies during its annual business meeting held at the Mona Campus April 20-21, set tuition fees for academic year 2006/2007 in accordance with its previous commitments to attain a cost recovery ratio of 20 percent of total economic costs on all three campuses, while keeping annual increases at least on par with the inflation rate in Jamaica for students at Mona.

UWI VICE CHANCELLOR PROFESSOR E. NIGEL HARRIS GIVES ACCOUNT OF HIS FIRST YEAR OF STEWARDSHIP OF THE REGIONAL INSTITUTION

Professor Eon Nigel Harris, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, presented to the University Council a report on academic year 2004/2005 – his first complete year since assuming office as Vice Chancellor on October 1, 2004.
