UWI Launches New Online Catalogue System in January

The three campuses of the University of the West Indies i.e. Mona, Cave Hill and St. Augustine will be implementing a new, state-of-the-art integrated online system in its libraries in 2007. The Mona Campus will launch the system on Wednesday, January 3, 2007. This means that the users of the library will encounter a completely new online catalogue that is more user-friendly and provides improved services.

7th International Crossroads Conference of the ACS Agreement to be Signed

The 7th International Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference of the Association of Cultural Studies (ACS) will be held at University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus from July 3-7, 2008. The conference agreement between the UWI and the Association of Cultural Studies (ACS) will be signed on Thursday, December 7 at 10.00 a.m. at the Office of the Deputy Principal. Mikko Lehtonen, Treasurer and Executive Member of the ACS will be visiting Jamaica to facilitate the signing.

Professor Rex Nettleford named to Commonwealth Commission

Professor Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus at the University of the West Indies has been named a member of a high level Commonwealth group comprising ten members to be known as the Commonwealth Commission on Respect and Understanding. In this regard Professor Nettleford will be representing Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.

CONDOLENCES FOR FORMER UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR, BYRON ROBERTSON

The University of the West Indies has learnt with regret of the passing of former University Registrar, Mr. Byron Robertson whose death took place on Tuesday, November 21. UWI expresses sincere condolence to his family and friends. Mr. Robertson joined the staff of the University in 1970 as an Assistant Registrar until he was promoted to the post of Senior Assistant Registrar in June 1971 and then to Campus Secretary, Mona in August 1979. Consequent on the restructuring of the University in 1984, Mr. Robertson was named Campus Registrar.

50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE TROPICAL METABOLISM RESEARCH UNIT (TMRU)

The Tropical Metabolism Research Unit (TMRU), University of the West Indies celebrates its fiftieth (50th) anniversary and will also host a Conference as a part of this celebration. The Conference will be held over the period Wednesday, November 22 to Friday, November 24, 2006.

PROFESSOR GORDON SHIRLEY FOR PRINCIPAL, MONA CAMPUS

The Council of the University of the West Indies, meeting in Extraordinary session on Thursday, November 9th at the Mona Campus, decided to appoint His Excellency, Professor Gordon Valentine Shirley, as Principal of the Mona Campus in Jamaica, effective August 1, 2007 for an initial period of five years, succeeding Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie.

UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES MONA CAMPUS PRESENTATION OF GRADUATES CEREMONY – SATURDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2006

With reference to news reports of' "pandemonium" and "chaos" at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, November 11 at the National Indoor Sports Centre, the UWI wishes to advise that a decision was taken to hold the Presentation of Graduates ceremonies at the National Indoor Sports Centre until its own facility is built, because of the vagaries of the weather at this time of the year, which very often interrupted its previous ceremonies held outdoors.

BOOK LAUNCH

The Faculty of Humanities and Education will host a launch of the book Ruined by “Race” Afro-Caribbean Missionaries and the Evangelization of Southern Nigeria, 1985-1925 by Dr. Waibinte Wariboko on Wednesday, November 8 commencing at 6:00 p.m. in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI Mona Campus.
Dr. Swithin Wilmot, Head, Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Education will bring greetings, while Sir Roy Augier, (Emeritus Professor of History) Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI will launch the book.

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Our Mutual Responsibility

“Sexual and Reproductive Health, Our Mutual Responsibility” is the theme for this year’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Conference organized by The Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management Unit in the Faculty of Medical Science, University of the West Indies (UWI). The Conference runs from October 26-28 and begins with an official opening session at 6 pm in the Grand Caribbean Suite, The Knutsford Court Hotel in which Professor Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor of UWI will give the address.

UWI DEPLORES ABDUCTION OF LECTURER

The University of the West Indies deeply deplores the incident in which one of our lecturers Dr. Kingsley Stewart was abducted from the campus. We also regret the security apprehensions this has fuelled in yet another educational institution.
