UWI Upgrades Facilities for Basic Medical Sciences

Teaching and laboratory resources for students in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona have been significantly upgraded as part of an initiative within the Faculty to expand and modernise its facilities.

PATRICIA ANDERSON APPOINTED PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Patricia Anderson, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mona to the position of Professor of Applied Sociology.

"Mental Illness and Personal Identity’"

‘Mental Illness and Personal Identity’ is the title of a lecture to be delivered by Professor George Graham of the Wake Forest University in North Carolina, USA on Friday, December 9, 2005 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building at the UWI, Mona Campus, from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

The lecture is being organized by the Philosophy Section of the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, Mona.

Interested persons are invited to attend.

PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL AWARDS FOR OWEN MORGAN

Professor of Medicine and Neurology and former Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Dr. Owen St. Clair Morgan, has been elected to Mastership of The American College of Physicians(ACP). The award will be presented at the College’s Annual Session to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Thursday, April 6, 2006.

UWI/ILO TO HOST NOBEL PEACE PRIZE SOCIAL POLICY LECTURES DEC. 5-7

The University of the West Indies and the International Institute of Labour Studies will host the 7th annual International Labour Organization (ILO) Nobel Peace Prize Social Policy Lectures at the Mona School of Business Executive Lecture Theatre from Monday, December 5 to Wednesday, December 7. The theme of the lectures will be ‘The New Offshoring of Jobs and Global Development’.

NEW DEAN FOR MEDICAL SCIENCES AT UWI

The Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies has a new Dean. He is Professor Archibald McDonald, Specialist in Trauma and Professor of Surgery and Emergency Medicine. Professor McDonald was appointed Dean effective, 1st of August 2005, having served as Head of the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care since August 2002. He replaces Professor Owen Morgan, who has retired.

FD11A TO GO AHEAD AS SCHEDULED

All mid-semester examinations scheduled for today, Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus have been postponed EXCEPT FOR the CROSS-CAMPUS EXAMINATION, CARIBBEAN CIVILIZATION (FD11A), which will go ahead as scheduled in the Assembly Hall at Mona, beginning at 6.30 p.m.

MONA CAMPUS CLOSED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will be closed for the rest of today, Tuesday, October 4, 2005 as there is a broken main on the University Hospital compound which is affecting the water supply to the campus.

Arrangements are being made to have water trucked to essential areas such as the halls of residence and the Health Centre until the repairs are effected.

In the meantime, all classes and business operations at the campus have been suspended.

MONA CAMPUS RE-OPENS OCT. 5

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to advise that the Campus will resume normal operations on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 as water has been restored to the campus.

All classes will be held as scheduled and administrative offices and other services will be open for business at the usual times.

Hopeton Dunn appointed Director,UWI’s Digicel Foundation Programme in Telecommunications Policy and Management

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Hopeton S. Dunn to the post of Director, UWI Digicel Foundation Programme in Telecommunications Policy and Management (TPM), based at the Mona School of Business, UWI.
The establishment of a new Programme and Chair in Telecommunications Policy was announced in April this year by Harry Smith, Chairman of Digicel Foundation at a reception hosted by the University to honour partners of the Mona Campus.
