Productivity Expert Suggests Integrated Approach for Productivity Improvement in Public Sector

Professor and Chair of Public Administration at Rutgers University in the USA, Dr. Marc Holzer, has commended the Government on its efforts to modernize the public sector but emphasized that Government needs to adopt an integrated approach if it is to achieve significant and comprehensive improvement in productivity in the sector. He says that significant improvement in productivity will only be achieved when there is integration between the internal capacities of the public sector and the services it is expected to deliver.

UWI to help establish National Hazardous Materials and Waste Inventory

The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) has provided just over J$5 million to the Chemistry Department, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, University of the West Indies (UWI) to lead a 15 month project to develop a hazardous waste inventory for Jamaica and to assess policy options for the management of hazardous waste in the island, or develop such policy options where necessary. The UWI is contributing J$250,000 to the project.

Brown’s Town Community College in St. Ann is now offering the University of the West Indies’ generic Bachelor of Science degree programme in Nursing under a franchise arrangement between the two institutions.

Gender In The 21st Century – Focus Of 2003 Mona Academic Conference

“Gender in the 21st Century: Perspectives, Visions and Possibilities” is the theme for the 2003 Mona Academic Conference to be held from August 29 to 31 at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus. The conference is being organised by the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, UWI, as it celebrates its 10th anniversary.

University of the West Indies Tests Rotavirus Vaccine

A new vaccine to protect babies against the rotavirus gastroenteritis is being tested at the University of the West Indies/University Hospital of the West Indies, Vaccines Infectious Diseases Centre. The local trial began in February 2002 and is being led by Professor Celia Christie, an Infectious Diseases specialist with international experience in clinical trials. Other members of the research team include Dr. Kirk Thame, a gastroenterologist, as well as research nurses Hyacinth Smith, Lavern Malcolm and Jasmine Brown.

BARBARA BAILEY PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Barbara Bailey, Senior Lecturer and Regional Coordinator, Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) to the post of Professor with effect from May 28, 2003.
