Three UWI Professors awarded National Honours

Three University of the West Indies (The UWI) professors have been awarded the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander. The Awards were presented at the Ceremony of Investiture and Presentation of National Honours and Awards held at King’s House on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 21, 2013. They are University Director of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies’ Regional Coordinating Unit, Professor Verene Shepherd, Professor  of Literary and Cultural Studies Carolyn Cooper and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry, Tara Dasgupta.
 

Cave Hill Principal Hilary Beckles appointed Special Advisor to UN Secretary-General

University of the West Indies Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal Sir Hilary Beckles has been appointed a special advisor to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, bringing further international acclaim to the Cave Hill campus at a time when it is celebrating its Golden Jubilee.
 
The UN’s top official wrote to Sir Hilary in late September inviting him to be a member of the recently established Scientific Advisory Board which will advise the Secretary General and executive heads of other UN organisations on science, technology and innovation for sustainable development.
 

CB Group/UWI 5K ready set for Nov.17

On Sunday November 17, 2013 at 7am sharp, thousands will be off to fast start at the UWI Mona Bowl for the second staging of the CB Group/ UWI 5K Run/Walk.

 
This year’s staging will include new features such as electronic timing bibs and a new route with 75% of the course being on the scenic UWI Mona Campus. The Race will start and end at the UWI Mona Bowl. The Honoree this year will be The Honorable Michael ‘Mike’ Fennel, OJ., for his dedicated service to the Jamaica Olympic Association as President for 36 years. His award will be presented during the post-race awards ceremony.

New UWI Mona Deputy principal appointed

Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa has been appointed Deputy Principal of The University of the West Indies Mona Campus effective October 1, 2013, the UWI Vice Chancellor has announced.
 
Professor Kahwa previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Science & Technology and Professor of Supramolecular Chemistry at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona.
 
Ishenkumba Kahwa holds the Bachelor of Science BSc (Ed) (Hons) and the Master of Science (MSc Inorganic Chemistry) from the University of Dar es Salaam and a PhD (Inorganic Chemistry) from Louisiana State University (USA). 
 

UWI Mona’s Prof. Michael Taylor awarded Silver Musgrave Medal for work in Climate Change

Head of the Department of Physics at the University of the West Indies, Professor Michael Taylor has been awarded the Silver Musgrave Medal by the Institute of Jamaica for his work in climate change.
The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at the Institute of Jamaica.
 

Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson to address UWI Development and Endowment Fund luncheon

The UWI Development and Endowment Fund will host its third annual Donor Recognition and Scholarship Awards function. The event will be held on Thursday October 10 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel commencing at 12:00 noon with feature address by Former Prime Minister the Most Honourable PJ Patterson.

 

UWI Takes a Shot at Cyber Crime

Members of the public are being invited to attend a two-day National Conference on Cyber Security and Digital Forensics to take place next week Monday and Tuesday, September 30 – October 1, 2013.
 
The event will be hosted by the Mona ICT Policy Centre in partnership with the global Internet Society (ISOC), based in Washington, DC. Also associated with the event is the law firm Henlin Gibson Henlin and CARIMAC. It will take place at the Regional Headquarters of the University of the West Indies at Mona in Kingston under the theme “Protecting Identity, Banking and Citizen Information Networks”.
 

The UWI’s Single Virtual University Space Launches Pilot

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) welcomes students to its Single Virtual University Space (SVUS), an initiative of Vice Chancellor Professor E. Nigel Harris. Through the SVUS, The UWI is answering the call of regional governments for increased access to UWI’s programmes.  Through technology and resource sharing among the campuses, The UWI is managing to do just that.
 

Minna Israel appointed to UWI regional headquarters as Special Advisor

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris, has announced the appointment of Ms Minna Israel, Chair of the Board and Distinguished Business Fellow of the UWI Mona School of Business and Management, as Special Advisor to the Vice-Chancellor on Resource Development. 
 
 
Ms Israel, who has had a distinguished career in the financial sector both in Jamaica and regionally, will operate out of the Vice-Chancellery.  She is expected to oversee the three-pronged institutional advancement functions of fund-raising, alumni relations and marketing & communications, working with the teams engaged in those functions at the UWI Regional Headquarters and in the campuses.
 

The UWI’s Vice Chancellor Among 18 Honoured in Scotland

Professor E. Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and former US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton were honoured in Scotland at the 600th Anniversary of Academia of the University of St. Andrews on September 13.
 
They joined 18 honourees lauded by St. Andrews University as “some of the best minds of our generation, leading academics from around the globe”, as the university acknowledged “the outstanding achievements of women and men whose thoughtful scholarship and outstanding integrity has changed both our world, and the way we understand our place in it.”
