UWI Guild President Tours with National Badminton Squad

The University of the West Indies, Mona congratulates President of the Guild of Students, UWI Mona, Vishwanauth Tolan who has been invited for the third time to be a member of the Jamaica Badminton Squad and has been training with the team for the past month.  The Team travelled on Saturday, January 9 to play in the open badminton tournament in Washington DC.

Vishwanauth, a past student of Calabar High School, was student Council president from 2004 to 2005. He was captain of the all island badminton championship team and all island junior triple champion in 2004 and 2005.  He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Computer Based Management Information Systems.

UWI Lecturer to Give Grand Rounds Lecture at the National Institutes of Health

Dr. Marshall Tulloch-Reid, Lecturer in Epidemiology in the Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI) has been invited to speak at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Inter-Institute Endocrinology Grand Rounds in Bethesda, Maryland on Friday December 11, 2009. 

Dr. Tulloch-Reid’s presentation entitled “The Consequences of Obesity in Jamaican Youth” will focus on his research work in Jamaica. The presentation will include the findings of the first study to document the presence of type 2 diabetes in Caribbean Youth, sponsored by The University of the West Indies New Initiative Fund and the Caribbean Health Research Council, for which he was Principal Investigator.
 

Cheryl Brown Presented at International Bioethics Committee

The Manager at the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR), UWI, Mona and Attorney-at-law, Cheryl Brown was a specially invited guest at the 16th session of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) in Mexico City held on November 22 – 25. The Session was followed by a meeting of the Joint Action for Capacity Building in Bioethics (JACOB).  Ms. Brown made a presentation to the IBC on the establishing of a National Bioethics Committee (NBC).

Ms. Brown has been Jamaica’s Representative to the Inter-Governmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) since 2007.  This is the first time any representative from the Anglo-phone Caribbean has been on the Committee.   In July of this year, she was made Vice-Chair for the Bureau of the IGBC.

Jerome Miller-Vaz Recognized As Diamond Honoree

Mrs. Jerome Miller-Vaz, head of the Western Region, Open Campus, at The University of the West Indies, and immediate past president of the Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association(CTLPA) has been recognized as a Diamond Honoree by the American College Personnel  Association (ACPA) Foundation for her exceptional contributions to education throughout her career.  Through its Diamond Honoree programme the Foundation annually recognizes a small group of educators who have made significant contributions of leadership and scholarship to their institutions, to ACPA and to students.  

AFUWI Bursaries Awarded to Three UWI Open Campus Students

In a banner year of achievements for the newest campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), The Office of the UWI Board for Undergraduate Studies has announced that three top students of the Open Campus have received bursaries valued at US$2,250 each for the 2009-2010 academic year.  The awards are offered by the American Foundation of The UWI (AFUWI), a non- profit Foundation, which over the past decade has provided scholarships and grants and funded special projects to foster the development of the UWI.

Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald Officially Inducted As First Principal of the UWI Open Campus

Amid showers of blessing and colorful blue, red, white and orange backdrops on the elegant grounds of the Governor General’s mansion, Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald was inducted by the Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor the Hon. Sir George Alleyne, as the first Principal of the Open Campus on Friday, October 16, 2009. The ceremony opened with the traditional academic procession of UWI staff and faculty wearing the robes and colours of the University and then by the Chancellor’s procession led by the mace-bearer, who carried the University's ceremonial mace symbolizing the continuing authority of the governance of the institution.

Global Child Development Group Hosts Working Meeting In Jamaica

The Global Child Development Group, whose secretariat is hosted by the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC) of the University of West Indies’ (UWI) Open Campus, and the Child Development Research Group at the UWI, Mona, will host its working meeting from December 8-11, 2009 at the Breezes Resorts and Spa, Rio Bueno, Jamaica. The meeting is supported by The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Bernard van Leer Foundation (BvL) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Diana Brydon to Deliver Third Edward Baugh Distinguished Lecture

The Department of Literatures in English at The UWI, Mona Campus presents the third lecture in the Edward Baugh Distinguished Lecture Series on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, beginning at 11.00 a.m.  The lecture will be delivered by Canada Research Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies at the University of Manitoba and Director of the Research Centre for Globalization and Cultural Studies, Professor Diana Brydon. Her lecture is entitled "Metaphors that disturb and inspire: the challenge of reading across cultures". 

Sir Hilary to Receive Honorary Doctorate in Ghana

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana will confer on Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and Principal of Cave Hill Campus Professor Sir Hilary Beckles an honorary doctorate at a Special Congregation in the Great Hall of the university on Friday November 27, 2009.
