UWI Mona Campus Culture and Heritage Tour to be launched, Monday, July 14


As part of an initiative to showcase its rich heritage and culture, The University of the West Indies, Mona will launch an official Culture & Heritage Tour on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, beginning at 9.00 a.m. The ceremony will be preceded by a performance of the Tivoli Marching Band and will be followed by an actual tour of the Mona Campus conducted by UWI students who have been trained as tour guides.

Canadian Govt, UWI, Mona Host Ideas Forum

The Government of Canada, in collaboration with The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus hosted an Ideas Forum, at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre on June 23 & 24, 2008 aimed at facilitating independent policy discussion on the core issues affecting Caribbean development. The forum, which was a follow-up to the successful forum held in Barbados in 2007, discussed issues related to the promotion and advancement of regional security; educational capacity and sustainability; governance, citizenship and accountability; and economic growth and entrepreneurship.

UWI, Mona Signs Collaboration Agreement With Jamaica Football Federation

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has signed a cooperation agreement with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) to establish the National Football Academy at the Mona Bowl on the University Campus.


The agreement was signed on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at a press conference held at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Principal of the UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Gordon Shirley, signed on behalf of the University and JFF President, Captain Horace Burrell, signed for the Federation.

Conference Guarantees Full Cultural Immersion For Participants

After crossing the northern hemisphere from North America to Europe, the international cultural studies conference of the Association for Cultural Studies (ACS), 2008 ACS Crossroads, is cruising into the Caribbean on its first journey to the south.

To celebrate its arrival, the local organising committee has planned a grand cultural immersion experience that will bring together the over 500 international scholars and local residents on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Rachel Manley to speak at UWI Library Exhibition for M.G. Smith

Celebrated Jamaican author Rachel Manley is to be the guest speaker at the opening of an exhibition in honour of the late M.G. Smith on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 5:15 pm at the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library, the University of the West Indies, Mona. Manley’s talk is entitled ‘The Mike Smith I knew’, reflecting the long and close relationship Smith had with the Manley family.

Ras Tafari Report to be featured at Conference in honour of M.G. Smith

‘Rethinking the Ras Tafari Report’ is the title of a panel being featured as a part of the 6th Caribbean Reasonings Conference hosted by The University of the West Indies, Mona in honour of the late Jamaican anthropologist M.G. Smith. The Ras Tafari Report was first published in 1960 by the then University College of the West Indies based on the study of the religious movement conducted by then young scholars, Rex Nettleford, Roy Augier and Michael Garfield (M.G.) Smith.

6th Caribbean Reasonings Conference Honours M.G. Smith

John Cowles Professor of Sociology at Harvard University, Orlando Patterson will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony of the 6th Caribbean Reasonings Conference on Wednesday,   June 11, 2008 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, The University of the West Indies, Mona. The Conference is titled “M. G. Smith and the Emergence of Social Anthropology and Social Theory in the Caribbean and Beyond” and seeks to highlight the contribution and work of M.G Smith, distinguished social anthropologist and social theorist.

Barbara Bailey Receives Prestigious CARICOM Triennial Award

University Director of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies at The University of the West Indies, Professor Barbara Bailey, has been selected as the recipient of the Ninth CARICOM Triennial Award for Women, 2008. The Award was introduced in 1983 to recognize and honour women of distinction in the Caribbean whose work had made a significant contribution to socio-economic development at the national and regional levels.

Sixteen to be awarded Honorary Degrees at 2008 UWI Graduation Ceremonies

A record sixteen persons are to be conferred with honorary doctorates at the UWI graduation ceremonies in October and November this year – six at the Mona Campus and five each at the Cave Hill and St Augustine campuses in the annual ritual of recognising outstanding contributors to the region and the wider Diaspora. The Council of the University, at its annual business session on Friday, April 25, endorsed the recommendations of a joint committee of Council and Senate for the degrees to be conferred.

University Council Appoints Ten to Senior Management Positions in the Expanded Institution

At the annual business meeting of University Council held on April 25, 2008 at the institution’s Mona Campus in Jamaica, the supreme governing body approved the appointment of several senior managers. Firstly, Professor Clement Sankat, former Pro Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies, who has been acting as Principal of the St Augustine Campus for the past six months, was confirmed in the position. He succeeds Professor Bridget Brereton who in turn took over as Principal following the reassignment of Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Planning and Development.
