Mona To Adopt Wide Ranging Measures To Deal With Budgetary Cuts

The University of the West Indies, Mona is to adopt a number of initiatives aimed at minimising the impact of the recent cut indicated in the Budget Estimates submitted to Parliament by the Government of Jamaica. The initiatives include accelerating the pace of transformation into a more agile and self reliant campus, the introduction of new academic programmes, an increased focus on long-term programmes that would be attractive to international students,  and a focus on units that are capable of generating income.  Administrative reform was also high on the Agenda of the campus.

UWI, Mona Hosts Caribbean Agriculture and Food Seminar

The Office of the Principal, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus held the first in a series of seminars aimed at focusing attention on the future of Caribbean agriculture and food on Tuesday, March 3, 2009.

First GPS Navigation Product in Jamaica Launched by UWI

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI) at UWI, Mona yesterday (March 5, 2009) launched the first Global Positioning System (GPS) Navigation product in Jamaica at the Senior Common Room, UWI, Mona. Director of Mona GeoInformatics Institute, Dr. Parris Lyew-Ayee noted that the launch of the GPS Navigation in Jamaica brings Jamaica on par with other countries such as the United States. He said the system would be especially useful to the diplomatic community whose members are accustomed to the availability of such technology to meet their navigational needs.

UWI's National Integrity Action Forum engages Opinion Shapers

The National Integrity Action Forum (NIAF) held its first Outreach Meeting at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies on Wednesday, March 4, 2009.  The meeting engaged in dialogue selected newspaper columnists, talk-show hosts, television presenters and other ‘opinion shapers’ around recommendations to more effectively combat corruption and to strengthen Jamaica’s integrity framework.

UWI To Establish Confucius Institute

The University of the West Indies, Mona and the Government of the People’s Republic of China have signed an agreement to establish a Confucius Institute at Mona. The Institute will be the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. The agreement was signed on Thursday, February 12 by Mona Principal, Professor Gordon Shirley, and China’s Ambassador to Jamaica, H. E. Chen Jinghua at a ceremony held at the Office of the Prime Minister, Jamaica.

Service for Professor Charles Denbow February 27th

The University of the West Indies, Mona has learnt with regret of the passing of Consultant Cardiologist and former Head of the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Charles Denbow on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. The funeral service for Professor Denbow will take place on Friday, February 27, 2009 at the University Chapel, beginning at 2.00 p.m

Caribbean Author Curdella Forbes Launches Book at UWI, Mona

The third collection of fiction titled, "A Permanent Freedom" by the gifted West Indian writer and academic, Dr. Curdella Forbes will be launched at the Undercroft, The University of the West Indies, Mona on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 6 pm. The guest speaker will be Professor Emerita Maureen Warner-Lewis.

Class of 2007 First Degree Graduates Invited to Participate in Tracer Survey

The Office of the Principal, Mona Campus, is currently conducting a Tracer Survey of First Degree graduates from the Class of 2007.

The survey is being conducted to obtain feedback from graduates on their experience in the job market since leaving UWI, and to gain insight on how their undergraduate education at UWI prepared them for the world of work.  This valuable feedback will allow the Mona Campus to improve upon the overall quality of education that UWI offers to its students.

STATEMENT FROM THE UWI ON THE PASSING OF AMBASSADOR DR LUCILLE MATHURIN-MAIR

It was with deep sadness that the University of the West Indies community learned of the passing of Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Lucille Mathurin-Mair.  Beginning with her tenure as the first Warden of Mary Seacole Hall between 1957 and 1974, and throughout her academic career, she has had a significant influence on the lives of many West Indian women.

Hopeton Dunn to Act as Secretary General of International Research Organization

UWI Telecommunications and Media academic, Dr Hopeton Dunn has been named to act as Secretary General of the prestigious global academic organization - the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR). He will carry out the additional responsibilities of this office from his academic base at the Mona School of Business, UWI.
