Actuarial Foundation donates two Annual Scholarships to the University of the West Indies

Applications are now open for the Actuarial Foundation Caribbean Actuarial Scholarships valued at United States four thousand dollars (US$4000) and tenable at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Two scholarships will be awarded to students, one entering the second year of studies and another entering the third year.

The Caribbean Actuarial Scholarship was established in memory of Basil L. and Monica G. Virtue by their son-in-law, S. Michael McLaughlin, an actuary who graduated from UWI. This scholarship is intended to be an annual award to UWI actuarial student(s) who demonstrate a strong record of accomplishment, leadership qualities and a commitment to becoming an actuary.

A Fixed Exchange Rate for Jamaica?

The University of the West Indies, Mona in association with the Caribbean Policy Research Institute (CaPRI) will host a seminar titled “The Question of a Fixed Exchange Rate for Jamaica – An Answer from Theory and Practice” on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 9 a.m. at the Blue Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge.

The seminar will be led by Dr. Damien King, UWI lecturer in     The Department of Economics and Senior Research Fellow, CaPRI who will explore the question of whether the country should change its currency regime from the present system of a flexible or ‘floating’ one in which the exchange rate is determined by the demand for and supply of foreign currency, to some form of fixed exchange rate or ‘dollarization’.

Mona is Champion at UWI Games 2009

It’s official! UWI, Mona was crowned champion of UWI Games 2009 held recently at UWI, St. Augustine in Trinidad, reclaiming the title that they have won in six of the last seven biennial Games. Neither St. Augustine nor Cave Hill could dethrone the reigning champions, whose final count of 102 points bested Cave Hill’s total of 80, and dwarfed St. Augustine’s 56-point tally. The Games culminated on Thursday, May 28 with a formal Closing Ceremony at the Office of the Campus Principal, UWI, St. Augustine where the host campus St. Augustine ceremonially handed over the UWI Games flag to the Cave Hill campus, who will host the games in 2011. 

Security Initiatives Achieve Success

As part of the ongoing strategy to reduce criminal activities on The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus, the Police have secured convictions for persons involved in theft on the Campus. This is the culmination of several months of investigation by the Office of the Director of Security and the Mona Police supported by Campus Security.

Update on Security Issues

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to report that significant progress is being made in the efforts to clear up crimes involving members of the Campus community. In recent weeks, Campus Police, collaborating with the Matilda’s Corner Police, have been able to recover several items of stolen property. The Police have also been able to identify and arrest perpetrators of these crimes, including two men suspected to be responsible for a number of abductions and sexual attacks involving University students at various locations in the Corporate Area.

Bermuda joins the UWI Family

Bermuda’s petition to be recognised as a full contributing country of The University of the West Indies (UWI) was unanimously accepted at the recently concluded Annual Business Meeting of The University of the West Indies’ Council, which was held for the first time at the St Augustine Campus in Trinidad. This means that the Government of Bermuda will from here on contribute to the revenues of The UWI based on an agreed formula, and students from Bermuda will be charged tuition fees at the subsidised rate.

Vice-Chancellor Nigel Harris reappointed for a second term

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor E. Nigel Harris, who is in the penultimate year of his six-year contract won the confidence of the institution’s highest governing body, the University Council, for a second six-year term, effective August 1, 2010.

UWI Annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day - May 28-29, 2009

The UWI School of Nursing, Mona, will host its Annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day from May 28-29, at the School’s Lecture Theatre, the Mary Seivwright Building, 9 Gibraltar Camp Way, UWI, Mona Campus.

Cultural Icon Professor Rex Nettleford Awarded Chancellor’s Medal

Internationally acclaimed cultural icon, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford has been awarded the prestigious Chancellor’s Medal of The University of the West Indies in recognition of his “signal, substantial and likely lasting contribution to the welfare and development of The University of the West Indies as a regional institution”.

Marvin Reid Promoted to the rank of Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer and Director of the Sickle Cell Unit, Tropical Medicine Research Institute, Dr. Marvin Reid to the rank of Professor.

Professor Reid holds the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Degree as well as the Doctor of Philosophy in Community Medicine from the University of the West Indies. He has completed studies in Clinical Nutrition at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom (1993) and Postdoctoral Studies from Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, USA (2000).
