Issues on Child Sexuality and Violence to Take Center Stage at Third Caribbean Child Research Conference

Against the background of the crisis facing the nation’s children, the latest research on violence against children, child sexuality, parenting and other pressing issues concerning children’s rights will be unveiled on October 21-22, 2008 at the Jamaica Pegasus at the third Caribbean Child Research Conference.

Minister of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Olivia Grange will deliver the keynote address at the two-day Caribbean Child Research Conference, being held under the theme Promoting Child Rights through Research: Building a Region Fit for Children.

Merritone Symposium

“Fifty eight years of Musical Excellence: Merritone and the Sound System in the Development of Jamaican Popular Music” is the theme of the Symposium being hosted by the Mona School of Business in association with the Department of Government, The University of the West Indies, Mona on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 10: 30 am at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. It will mark the fifty eight years of Merritone in Jamaica and explore its contribution to Jamaican Popular music development.

NETTLEFORD TO ADDRESS NURSING LEAGUE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY BANQUET – OCTOBER 4

Vice Chancellor Emeritus of The University of the West Indies, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford will deliver the main address at the Banquet and Awards ceremony being hosted by the University Hospital League of Graduate Nurses on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios, beginning at 7.00 p.m.

“The Business of Sport”

The Mona School of Business and the Department of Management Studies at The University of the West Indies, Mona host the first in a Series of panel discussions for the academic year titled “The Business of Sport.” The event is scheduled for Friday, September 26, 2008 at 6 pm at the Graduate Lecture Theatre (GLT 3), The Alister McIntyre Building. The panel discussion highlights trends and opportunities in the sports industry.

Normalcy Returns at UWI Tuesday, September 23.

Normal operations at the UWI, Mona Campus resume today, Tuesday, September 23, 2008 following the restoration of water supply to the Campus by the National Water Commission.

UWI, Mona Closes on September 22, 2008

Classes at the UWI, Mona Campus will be suspended today, Monday, September 22, 2008 as of 4 pm. All administrative offices will also be closed. This is as a result of the lack of water supply to the campus from the National Water Commission caused by turbidity at the Hope Filter Plant as a result of the recent heavy rains. The UWI did not receive prior notice of this situation.

Normal Operations Resume at The UWI, Mona Campus on Monday, September 1, 2008

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to advise that normal operations will resume at the Campus on Monday, September 1, 2008 and all administrative offices and other services will be open for business at the usual times.

In light of the disruptions caused by Tropical Storm Gustav, registration will be extended for another two days, Monday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 2 and academic staff will be available for counselling during this period.

Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 3.

UWI, Mona Campus to Close Due to Hurricane Threat

Owing to the threat posed by Tropical Storm Gustav, all activities at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies will be suspended at 10:00 a.m. today, Thursday, August 28, 2008 and the Campus will remain closed tomorrow in the event that Gustav hits Jamaica.

Members of staff should ensure that their departments are secured. Essential services and Emergency operations will remain open.

Special arrangements are being made for students who are resident on campus to remain in hall.
