The Transformation Agenda in Education

Each year the School of Education organizes Forums on educational issues of topical interest. This year’s theme is titled The Transformation Agenda in Education: Issues and Challenges. The forum is the fifteenth in the Series and is being held on Thursday, May 17 at 5:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Humanities and Education. It will take the format of a panel discussion and presentations from two guest speakers: Frank Weeple, Executive Director, Education Transformation Team and Dr. Disraeli Hutton, Lecturer, Department of Educational Studies, UWI, Mona.

UWI Presents Sporting Workshops For Young Student Athletes

Another Top A Di Top Workshop in the Series is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 9 at 2 pm at the UWI Playing Field, UWI, Mona. The focus of this week’s workshop session will be netball. Several top netballers are slated to share with young student athletes at the Workshop including members from the National Netball Programme.

“Security: A Major Challenge for Higher Education Institutions”

The Jamaica Chapter of the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) will be launched on Friday, May 18, at 9 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Following the official launch, a Seminar addressing the theme, “Security: A Major Challenge for Higher Education Institutions” will be held.

Ambassadors' Lecture Series

The Latin American-Caribbean Centre (LACC) initiates its Ambassadors' Lecture Series on Thursday, May 3 with a presentation by Venezuela on Venezuelan Politics in the Chávez era: Bolivarian Socialism and ALBA and Venezuela's Foreign Policy in Latin America and the Caribbean at 9.30 am in Room GLT1 in the Sir Alister McIntyre Building, Mona Campus.

The Mexican Ambassador will speak also on Mexican Perspectives on NAFTA and the Evolution of a North American Regional Identity on May 8 at 5.30pm in SR15 in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mona.

Book Launch-"Amy Ashwood Garvey"

Liberty Hall, the Legacy of Marcus Garvey, in collaboration with the Majority Press, USA will host the launch of Tony Martin's book "Amy Ashwood Garvey" on Tuesday, May 8 at 6 pm. This will take place at Liberty Hall, 76 King St. and will be preceded by a tour of the museum at 5pm. All are invited.

CARIMAC Summer School Starts June 4

When undergraduate students retire for summer break this year, CARIMAC will welcome a new batch of students in its 25th annual Summer School Programme. The programme features some new courses such as Business Planning for the Self Employed, Short Feature Production for TV and Creativity Boot Camp, and some old favourites such as: Public Relations, Public Speaking and Radio Announcement and Presentation.

Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology presents the 23rd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture under the theme “Taking Leave: Fugitive Slaves and the coming of the American Civil War.” The Lecture takes place on Wednesday, May 9 at 6 pm at the Phillip Sherlock Centre of the Creative Arts, Mona Campus.

Professor Richard Blackett, Andrew Jackson Professor of History, Tennessee, USA, will deliver the Lecture.

Exhibition Launch of the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Trans Atlantic Trade

The Library, the University of the West Indies, Mona in association with the Jamaica Bicentenary Committee will have the Launch of its Exhibition for the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Trans Atlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans on Tuesday, May 1 at 2: 30 pm. The event takes place in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library. The Exhibition is designed to further public education on the Trans Atlantic Trade in Africans.

The University Community is invited. Interested individuals should to contact Sonia Stewart to confirm their attendance.

ID Reminder

Members of staff and students are reminded that they should have a valid UWI identification card (ID) at all times in their possession and this should be displayed while on the campus.

Jean Small Named National Public Speaking Champion

Jean Small, retired Tutor/Coordinator, Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona and Advanced Toastmaster – Silver from Dynamic Speakers Club and 2005 Caribbean Humourous Speech Champion, walked away with the coveted title of National Public Speaking Champion. The event was the recently held Toastmasters National Speech Finals. She along with National Champion for Table Topics (Impromptu Speaking) Orlando Morgan from National Housing Trust’s Visionaries will represent Jamaica at the Caribbean Public Speaking Championship at the 2007 May Conference in Kingston, May 18-20.
