Book Launch
The Centre for Caribbean Thought and the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies will launch the book by Kari Levitt, Reclaiming Development: Independent Thought and Caribbean Community on Wednesday, June 28 at the Undercroft, UWI, at 5:30 p.m. The Speaker will be Dr. Michael Witter, Head, Department of Economics, Mona.
Hurricane Preparedness Tips
The hurricane season is upon us, here are a few tips that you can take to better prepare for a hurricane.
Actions to be taken by Departments NOW:
Procure temporary roofing (plastic
sheeting)
Secure/store drinking water
Review general insurance policies
Identify work teams
Revise staff contact list
Procure waterproofing material (garbage
bags)
Have drains (surface and roof) cleaned
Make plans for battering buildings
Review vital records protection plan
Review your business continuity plan
Message from the Principal
I wish to thank you sincerely for responding to my invitation to attend the general staff meeting held on June 5. That some 70% of full-time staff attended the meeting indicates how welcome the idea of a general staff meeting was. So although time did not allow as lengthy an interchange of ideas as would be desirable, I wish to assure you that there will be additional opportunities for you to share your views and concerns about the University.

This is a worldwide competition for 2007 to select top Science and Technology Ph.D. participants eligible for study at prestigious U.S. institutions.
July-at-the-UWI Pogramme
The International Programmes Unit of the Office of Administration announces the 10th July-at-the-UWI programme. This is an enrichment programme for 11 – 17 year olds, aimed at exposing them to the UWI as a regional institution and to the science and culture of the Caribbean countries served by the UWI. This year’s programme takes place in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua, from July 17 – 27. Rosemarie Wright Pascoe Inducted as AACE Fellow
The American College of Endocrinology (ACE) the education and research arm of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist (AACE), inducted Dr. Rosemarie Wright Pascoe of The University of the West Indies, Mona as a Fellow during its recent Convocation Ceremony at the 2006 AACE Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress in Chicago, Illinois.
Designation as a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology) FACE) means an endocrinologist has achieved a level of training and experience consistent with the high standards established and adopted by the clinical endocrinology specialty.
The Julien Fédon Memorial Prize
The Grenada Centre of the University of the West Indies and the Institute for People’s Enlightenment have advised that the 2005 Julien Fédon Memorial Prize for Excellence in History has been awarded to Nsaka Sesepkekiu, of Antigua. He was the nominee of the Department of History at the St. Augustine Campus.
UWI Bookshop
Please be advised that The University Bookshop will be closed for its Annual Stock-Taking Exercise from Wednesday, June 28 to Saturday, July 1 and will reopen on Monday, July 3.
During the University's summer break, the Bookshop will suspend its Saturday operations, effective July 1. This service will however resume on Saturday, August 26 for the 2006/2007 academic year.
